Olive Groves, Vineyards & Abbeys

Umbria, Italy’s ‘mystical heart’
This Holiday in a nutshell
  • hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
  • explore astounding Assisi, Romanesque churches and abbeys
  • lush countryside and little-known mountains
  • earthy cuisine, robust wines

Rounded green hills, Romanesque churches veiled by cypresses, and the slight haziness which softens the scenery further, lend an undeniable romance to Umbria. This serene land of saints – St Francis was one of many to be born here – is rewarding walking country, not only because of the views, but also because of the timeless, medieval towns and villages which seemingly crown every undulation.

Relax over an early morning coffee as the sun begins to streak across the mountains, lighting up the spellbinding church of St Francis in a glorious, radiant light.

With tranquil churches, secret hermitages and wayside chapels dotted along ancient trails, there is an almost  mystical quality to this beautiful part of Umbria. From the world-renowned medieval town of Assisi, a hugely rewarding and fascinating walk leads you across the Valle Umbra, with rolling vineyards, olive groves and idyllic hill-top towns steeped in history. Summers are long, but higher up the air is fresh, and the green meadows are filled with spectacular flowers in May and June.
