Genoa & the Portofino Peninsula

Liguria - glittering seas & delicious seafood
This Holiday in a nutshell
  • two-centre city break and walk
  • discover historic Genoa, with notes provided for a self-guided city tour
  • explore the Portofino Natural Park, route notes provided
  • beautiful coastline
  • delicious seafood

The great port of Genoa is the perfect place to experience a true flavour of the delightful Ligurian Riviera that stretches all the way from France down into Tuscany. As an important Renaissance city state, many great artists were attracted here and their legacy in its palaces, cathedral and squares meant that Genoa was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006. It is also an area of delicious seafood, pesto and unusual white wines such as Sciacchetrà.
It is a place that 'grows upon you' every day. There are the most extraordinary alleys and by-ways to walk about in. You can lose your way (what a comfort that is, when you are idle!) twenty times a day, if you like; and turn up again, under the most unexpected and surprising difficulties.
Charles Dickens, 'Pictures from Italy'
Offering endlessly changing scenery and some of Europe’s finest coastal walking, this delightful short break explores the unspoiled Portofino Peninsula, where warm, wooded mountains tumble steeply down to the Mediterranean, and fishing ports nestle in the little bays and sandy coves. From the heights of Monte Portofino, there are extensive views over the azure waters of the Gulf of Tugillio and down to the pretty villages of Portofino and Camogli.
