'Secret' Andros

A peaceful walkers’ paradise
This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
  • lovingly preserved ancient walking trails
  • rugged scenery
  • superlative views
  • the Venetian, Byzantine and Ottoman charm of Chora

Simple, quiet, authentic and unspoiled... Who would have thought it possible to find such a place, just a short hop from Athens and the Greek mainland? This surprisingly large and green island, a lush oasis occupying the northernmost reaches of the Cyclades archipelago, possesses quiet beaches, hills criss-crossed by walking trails, and a rare, understated beauty.

The scent of orange blossom and honeysuckle hung thick in the still air. Every so often, Chora appeared like a mirage on the horizon, framed by cypress trees. We drank from a 200-year-old fountain, rolled fallen lemons down the lanes and feasted on foraged mulberries that turned our fingers purple.
The Guardian

The landscape, riven by brooks that burble through waterfall-blessed valleys during spring, and dotted with arched stone bridges and venerable chestnut groves, is perhaps not what you might expect here. But the enticing coastline, air heavy with the scent of aromatic plants and herbs, and luminous evening light are all reassuringly and quintessentially Greek. Add to this a generous, warm-hearted people, and a network of ancient paths undergoing sensitive and painstaking restoration, and you have an island to enchant – and even thrill – the most demanding of walkers.
