It is the colour of Lanzarote that lingers in the memory long after other images have faded. Forged from volcanic fire and warmed by an African wind, the stark landscape has a fragile beauty, its reddened shales fading into yellow, while delicate pale green lichens coat the volcanic slopes and pristine white-shell beaches fringe the Atlantic shore. Redolent of North Africa but shaped by a Spanish culture, this is an island where small white villages dot the landscape, verdant vineyards emerge from the blackened earth and silent valleys stream towards the sea.

In the small fishing village of El Golfo, the sun beats down, the waves crash against the rocks and a smiling waiter is at your shoulder bearing a plate of perfectly grilled fish caught that very morning. Bliss!
The Telegraph

Based in Yaiza, twice voted the prettiest village in Spain and well away from the tourist enclaves of the south-east, you can take your pick of a wide selection of gentle or moderate walks all over the island. Some ascend the slopes of volcanoes, while others cross lava fields or explore the island’s unusual vineyards. There are ridge walks and descents through deserted valleys that end at delightful seafront restaurants, as well as coastal walks (both on Lanzarote and neighbouring La Graciosa) on which the only sound is that of the waves pounding the black volcanic rocks. We also include a guided walk in the Timanfaya National Park (subject to availability), a real highlight of any visit to Lanzarote.
