Soul of the Alentejo

Gentle rolling hills & cork-oak woodland

This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided, single-centre walk
  • timeless hill-top villages and rich wildlife
  • follow smugglers’ trails
  • high-quality guesthouse
  • flexible walking and sightseeing using hire car

Sometimes it’s more than worth the effort to make a sortie into a little-known place; a place away from the crowds, relatively untouched by the passage of time; a place with an authentic voice. The Serra de São Mamede is simply one of those places; a borderland of golden, rolling hills, topped by glistening, fortified villages. A sleepy backwater, just under three hours’ drive from Lisbon, where, meandering along cork-fringed, granite-edged lanes, you are transported back into the timeless traditions of deepest, rural Portugal. Marry this with warm hospitality, excellent food and a passion for all things Portuguese, and you have a recipe for a truly memorable and enriching experience.
Wonderful walking: beautiful hillsides painted yellow and purple with spring wildflowers, a palimpsest of histories inscribed on granite, remarkable wildlife, a distinct regional cuisine and, of course, marvellous Marvão. Yet Pomar Velho eclipses all...

Mr Ward, Durham
Once the domain of subsistence farmers and bands of locals who smuggled goods across the border under the cover of darkness during the Fascists dictatorship of the mid-20th century, this fascinating region is now a haven for wildlife and walkers wishing to get well off the beaten track. The dramatic landscapes of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park contrast with the rolling agricultural plains that extend to the south, and are a joy to explore on foot. Wildflowers line the paths in spring and early summer, while cork oak woods and olive groves still cover large swathes of the Serra.
