This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided, single-centre walk
  • converted fishermen's cottages deep within the Arctic Circle
  • great walking, with spectacular ocean views and abundant wildlife
  • wide range of interesting museums
  • car hire included

To explore the Lofoten archipelago deep within the Arctic Circle is to discover a land of stark beauty and great contrasts, where jagged mountains frame beaches of silver sand and rocky headlands stretch out into the Norwegian Sea. Home to sea eagles, puffins and numerous other sea birds, the islands – so blissfully removed from the bustle of the everyday world – encompass some of the wildest scenery you will encounter in Europe and it feels like a great privilege to explore such virgin landscapes.

It would have been difficult to have found any of these walks without your notes and we followed them without any problems. The walks were enjoyable - the views so good we were always behind time due to the number of photo stops!

The Lofoten Cottages are located in the fishing village of Mortsund on Vestvågøy Island, midway along the chain, a superb base from which to discover a variety of islands, fascinating Viking and fishing museums, pristine beaches and fantastic paths. Discover similarities in place names between the Lofotens and Britain, as you travel round, map in hand. With the Gulf Stream influence, extremes of temperature are rare and in summer the Norwegian Sea is warm enough for swimming.

The average maximum daytime temperatures and monthly rainfall relate to the nearest weather station and are intended as a guide only.

The weather is very changeable, although the Gulf Stream influence means that temperatures are milder than you might expect this far north. It is entirely possible to experience all types of weather in one day, so pack for all eventualities, including, of course, good waterproofs.
