  • self-guided city walking notes
  • rich history, art and heritage to uncover
  • enjoy as an add-on to another Inntravel holiday in northern Italy

Often overlooked as visitors head for the more famous Renaissance cities of Siena, Florence and Pisa, Lucca is a captivating city which contains a wealth of medieval and Renaissance architecture and impressive art. Within its medieval ramparts, red-tiled houses and ancient churches line narrow cobbled streets that lead to delightful squares, nowhere more so than the Piazza Anfiteatro. As well as its surprising art, the city also boasts fine dining in abundance, cheerful cafes, colourful markets and easy access to the surrounding countryside and coast.
To walk round the medieval walls of old Lucca is to step back in time, the echoes of the past rising up from the narrow winding streets below.

You have a choice of hotels, either the charming 4-star Hotel Ilaria, elegantly converted from the old stables of Villa Bottini, located near to one of the wall’s medieval gates; or the equally lovely 3-star Piccolo Hotel Puccini in the heart of the Old Town. Lucca is in itself quite remarkable, boasting medieval city walls that still encircle the town, its massive fortifications conjuring images of more volatile times. Today, all is calm, the walls now preserving the city's historic character and relaxed atmosphere, making it a joy to explore on foot.
