This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided journey by rail & boat
  • from Lake Geneva to Lake Lucerne
  • glittering lakes & stunning Alpine backdrops
  • easy mountain access using the integrated Swiss transport system
  • journey on the Golden Pass line

Famed for its mountains, Switzerland is also a land of spectacular lakes. This journey, by paddle steamer, Golden Pass train and historic mountain cog railways, links the best of Lake Geneva – vineyards, castles and historic towns – with the literal heart of Switzerland, Lake Lucerne (where the confederation was founded), via Lake Brienz and nearby Meiringen, home to spectacular gorges and mountains.

With such happiness, I sometimes sit out on our terrace at sunset and look over a vast green lawn to the lake in the distance, and beyond the lake to the reassuring mountains, and in this mood think of nothing and enjoy their magnificent serenity.

Charlie Chaplin

From Montreux – renowned for its jazz festival and with famous residents over the years as diverse as Byron and Charlie Chaplin – to the summit of Mount Pilatus near Lucerne, there’s something for everyone. Whether on a walk through the UNESCO-recognised Lavaux vineyards or sitting at a chestnut-shaded table on the terrace of the Hotel Victoria in Meiringen, gourmets can explore the finest local produce and traditions. Lovers of history shouldn’t miss the spectacularly set Château de Chillon on Lake Geneva, nor the exceptional Ballenberg open-air museum, with its extensive collection of vernacular architecture from all over Switzerland, as well as the beautiful city of Lucerne. And all this is never far from a breathtaking cable-car ride to a mountain top, for an eagle's-eye view of the summits and glittering waters far below.
