This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided, scenic and cultural journey by rail
  • Munich, Innsbruck, Verona and Venice
  • two nights at each high-quality, centrally located hotel
  • notes for a walking tour provided for each city

Before the advent of trains, a journey across the Alps was arduous and fraught with danger, as much from highwaymen as from the hazardous terrain. Nowadays it’s nothing but a pleasure, the only ‘risk’ being getting so caught up in the mountain scenery drifting past the window that you don’t hear your station being called. To do so would be to miss out on a wealth of culture, so consider yourself warned!

We will either find a way, or make one.
Attributed to Hannibal (Carthaginian military commander 247-183BC), on reaching the Alps with his army

Just as the Alps transcend national borders, so too does this journey, taking in not one, but three countries – Germany, Austria and Italy – so as to reveal four very different cities. Munich, just to the north of the Alps, is an easy-going city, frequently named the most liveable in the world, thanks to its leafy public spaces, beautiful architecture and vibrant cultural scene. To the south of the mountains lie two of Italy’s greatest cities, Roman Verona and beguiling Venice, while in between, right in the heart of the Alps, nestles fairy-tale Innsbruck, its Baroque architecture splendidly offset by the jagged peaks beyond.
