Piedmont might be the second-largest of all the Italian regions, but it is relatively little-known and an absolute joy to discover. Literally at the foot (piede) of the mountains (monte), its highlights are spread across rich agricultural plains lying between the Alps and the Apennines and include the grandiose city of Turin, the first capital of Italy; and the rolling, wave-shaped hills of the Langhe, renowned for their white truffles and velvety red wines. Small-town fortifications and crumbling, hill-top castles recall the days when feuding fiefdoms fought over trade and religion, but any arguments these days are more likely to be over the claims to fame of Barolo and Barbaresco, the prize-fighting products of the noble Nebbiolo grape; or the relative merits of delectable cheeses such as Montebore, tiered like a wedding cake, and pink-hued Bra Duro with its salty, floral tang. Yes, food matters here – so tuck in and enjoy it!
