A self-guided family cycling holiday in Europe is a great way to spend quality time together as you cycle from one family-friendly hotel to the next. We transfer yourluggage and provide you with high-quality bikes and our highly praised route notes and maps, the rest is up to you.
With lots to see and do along each route, as well as ‘free’ days built in so that you can do other things, our family cycling holidays are about more than pedalling from A to B. These being self-guided, non-group holidays, there’s no fixed timetable. Set off when you want, cycle as slowly as you want, and pause when you want – our reliable route notes flag up swimming spots, monuments and museums that are worth stopping at.
Each evening you can relax together in hand-picked, family-friendly accommodation, usually with a pool.
To primary-school children and younger or sporty teens, you can sell the holiday as a real family adventure, with the chance to help with map-reading, picnic by the side of streams, explore ancient castles and much more besides.
Older teenagers may prove harder to convince, but the prospect of chilling out by the pool every other day usually appeals, and you could combine it with some shopping and café culture by adding on a city break.
We’ve drawn on our own experiences of holidaying with children and teenagers when designing Inntravel’s family cycling holiday in Austria, so, above all, we’ve chosen a region – the Tyrol – which has plenty to offer besides cycling, and which appeals to all ages.
Travelling from outside the UK?
To give you a good idea of how we can tailor our trips to your individual requirements, take a look at the section of the website specifically devoted to travellers from outside the UK.
Alternatively, if you’d prefer to get the low-down on Inntravel holidays from someone who has first-hand experience, you can email Phil Wise. Based in California, Phil has taken many trips with us over the years, and will be happy to give you general information about travelling to Europe and the overall Inntravel holiday experience from an American perspective.
How our family cycling holidays are graded
For our family cycling holiday in Austria we have selected an area with flat terrain so that the cycling is generally easy (see our grading system below), although some routes cover greater distances than others. There are no age restrictions; you know what your children are capable of.
Grade 1
Easy cycling for all with shorter days mainly on the flat, but some gentle ascents.
Grade 1-2
Easy-to-moderate cycling featuring undulating routes with more frequent short ascents, and a mix of shorter and longer days.
Grade 2
Moderate cycling with some longer, steady uphill sections, and longer days.
Grade 2-3
Fairly strenuous cycling featuring longer days with some sustained climbs. (We don't currently have any holidays at this level.)
Family cycling holidays, Inntravel style
There are key ingredients to our family cycling breaks (and, in fact, all Inntravel holidays): attractive scenery; carefully selected accommodation where you’ll find a friendly welcome; and regional cuisine.
Reliable route notes
Lovingly compiled in-house, our route guides contain all the information you need to get from A to B independently, without missing out on the things that make for a full and varied holiday experience, such as the stories behind local customs and monuments. Updated constantly, they are totally reliable and like your own personal guide.
Your holiday, your choice
Independent, non-group holidays enable you to stay in smaller, one-of-a-kind hotels, and plan each day to suit you. The benefits don’t stop there. You can choose when to start, if or at which hotels to add extra nights, and whether to travel to your holiday by air, rail or ferry – we’ll book travel arrangements tailored to your requirements.
