Which holidays are best booked early?

Lucy Fletcher, 01 July, 2025
We asked our Travel Experts which of Inntravel's walking or rail holidays they recommend booking well in advance and why.
Tour du Mont Blanc
This iconic long-distance hike around western Europe’s highest peak is popular for good reason – standout views over the peaks and glaciers of the Mont Blanc massif make this a heart-stirring walk. We recommend booking a year in advance to secure the accommodation, all small independent guesthouses or auberges. The season for walking the Tour du Mont Blanc is relatively short – from June to September – with booking opening from March the year before.
Lake Garda
Our single-centre walking holiday in Gargnano, one of Lake Garda’s quieter lakefront towns, provides a week of leisurely walking and discovery. You spend your days harbour-hopping, walking, enjoying superb food and wine, and taking in the area’s Art Nouveau architecture.

One Inntraveller described it as “All in all a perfect holiday as there are walks, sightseeing, relaxing by the Lido and swimming in the lake.”
Dolomites, Italy
Walkers have discovered the delights of the Italian Dolomites, where not only the landscape – the famed jagged tooth-like peaks and wildflower-filled meadows below –make for incredible walking, but also the cuisine, a hearty blend of Tyrolean and Italian dishes.

Three ways to walk in the Dolomites:

A Stroll in the Dolomites is a single-centre holiday where you stay at a 4* spa hotel and enjoy relaxing routes using a mix of cable cars, gondolas, and funiculars.

Hiking the High Italian Dolomites on the other hand is a hotel-to-hotel walking holiday with luggage transfers, using moderate and challenging routes.
The High Dolomites

The Dolomites’ Three Peaks enjoys striking scenery on moderate to challenging hikes around the celebrated Three Peaks themselves while staying at family-run hotels, full of character.
Camino de Santiago
This long-distance ancient pilgrim’s trail is on many people’s wish list – whether for the walking, the camaraderie, the sense of achievement, or the significance of the route. Our self-guided holiday takes you along the quieter Portuguese route, known as the Old Way, and includes comfortable accommodation and luggage transfers.
Hadrian’s Wall
This is a classic long-distance hike along the iconic National Trail from Newcastle to Solway Firth. We include luggage transfers and stays at independent hotels, B&Bs, and guesthouses – where there’s even the chance to enjoy some optional stargazing. As it’s all independent accommodation, this holiday often books up far in advance.

Madeira
Madeira’s been enjoying a Renaissance amongst walkers, drawn to its jungle-like interior, levada trails, and sweeping coastal trails. The ever-popular Waterways, Flowers & Levada Walks of Madeira holiday showcases the best of the island as well as stays at high-quality hotels.
Iconic Norway by Fjord Cruise & Rail
Most of our Norway holidays are best booked early, but our 14-night Iconic Norway by boat and rail especially so. It features an unforgettable journey from beyond the Arctic Circle in the Lofoten Islands down the coast to the fjords, featuring coastal steamers and the renowned Flåm railway.
