The friendliness of fellow skiers, the feeling of being close to nature, and the chance to fully take in your surroundings make cross-country skiing a very enjoyable activity. What’s more, it’s suitable for almost anyone, regardless of age! It doesn’t normally take long to master the gliding stride, and steering is easy as you ski in ‘tramlines’ cut daily by a special machine.
Our Try It Out Weeks for complete beginners are a perfect introduction to cross-country skiing. You learn in the company of like-minded Inntravel guests during the quietest weeks of the season, ensuring the atmosphere is very relaxed and informal. After learning the basic techniques, you will be gently tutored to improve your skills. As well as a week’s classic ski rental, a week’s waxing and lessons, we include a fun and informative book about cross-country skiing.
This is an ideal place for beginners because everything is ‘in-house’ – the hotel has its own instructor, its own ski room where you get fitted with your skis, and the practice area is right outside. What’s more, the hotel staff will be happy to offer advice when you’re ready to explore independently.

Snow-sure Ylläs (pronounced ‘Oo-las’) boasts Finland’s largest and best cross-country network, with plenty of easy trails for beginners. Here, you can learn amid spellbinding scenery, and try your hand at a wide range of other winter activities between lessons if you so wish – downhill skiing, snowshoeing, ice-fishing, reindeer safaris, dog-sledding, torchlit walks...the list is almost endless!
You stay at the justifiably popular Ylläshumina Hotel, owned and run by Toivo Qvist, a former member of the Finnish cross-country skiing team. He will give you a thorough briefing before you head out with your instructor.
