Diverse cultures and traditions meet beneath the rugged peaks of the Pyrenees, which also shelter verdant valleys, peaceful villages and an excellent network of walking trails. As you explore these, you’ll be treated to magnificent mountain views, and, if you are lucky, sightings of rare flora and fauna.
Forming the frontier between France and Spain, the Pyrenees stretch all the way from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. The northernmost part of the chain is considerably greener, and the mountains rounder. Here, peaceful villages of whitewashed houses with red and green shutters nestle in the verdant valleys, and the Basque people, who speak their own language, are justly proud of their rich culture.
At the other end of the chain is Catalonia, whose own heritage is equally rich. Here, Romanesque churches and ancient stone villages dot the rugged landscape. All in all, both are fantastic regions for walking.
