A unique experience

Not many destinations boast natural attractions that didn't exist before 2020, but La Palma can. The eruption of 2021 created a new volcano whose black cone and surrounding lava fields contrast sharply with the great swathes of lush, green landscape that remained untouched by the eruption. Los Palmeros – who see tourism as the key to their full economic recovery – are keen, now that damaged infrastructure has been rebuilt, to welcome visitors to their island once again. Whether it's venturing deep into subtropical forests or barrancos (ravines), traversing dramatic ridges, or walking across vast fields of volcanic cinder, there's stunning walking within easy reach of your cottage.
  • A choice of walks from 5.5km to 7.5km

    La Zarza: 7.5km, 3hrs; ascent/descent 290m
    Follow a trail of ancient rock carvings that takes you through dense, subtropical rainforest, to the depths of a ravine where the still air resonates with birdsong and the green canopy closes in above.

    Las Tricias: 7.5km, 3hrs; ascent/descent 420m
    Meander through flower-rich meadows and alongside pretty cottage gardens to a small museum set in a restored windmill; a forest of ancient, mystical, dragon trees; and caves of pre-Hispanic rock carvings.

    Los Molinos: 7km, 3hrs; ascent/descent 450m
    Climb along the Barranco del Rio on a trail linking the 19th-century water mills that were the life blood of the town of Los Molinos, before descending into the Barranco de Las Nieves, to visit the Santuario de Las Nieves, home to the 'Virgin of the Snows', patron saint of La Palma.

    A short but strenuous route rises to the rim of the Caldera de Taburiente at 2,232 metres above sea level, rewarding your efforts with incredible views down into the Caldera and across the ocean to Mount Teide on neighbouring Tenerife.

    Cubo de la Galga: 7.km, 3hrs; ascent/descent 445m
    Experience the Lost World environment of the Los Tilos Biosphere on an adventure trail that leads through ancient laurel forests filled with giant ferns beneath a dense, humid canopy alive with birdsong.

    Volcán de San Antonio: 11km, 4.5hrs; ascent/descent 635m
    Traverse the rim of the San Antonio volcano with panoramic views across the extraordinary volcanic landscape of the southern slopes of the island. There’s the option to descend to the lighthouses of Fuencaliente which sit alongside working salt pans and an excellent restaurant.

    Climb steeply to a breathtaking view down into the Barranco Angustias before gently traversing a pine forest with two outstanding viewpoints, and returning along the Travesia path that winds its way through unspoiled, fragrant valleys.

    Caldera de Taburiente: 12.5km, 4.5hrs; ascent 210m / descent 1025m
    Descend through fragrant pine forest into the depths of the Caldera de Taburiente where waterfalls cascade and brooks flow along the floor of the mighty Angustias ravine below 1,000-metre-high peaks.

    Pico Bejenado: 14.5km, 6hrs; ascent/descent 895m
    Climb to a spectacular viewing platform above the Caldera de Taburiente on the summit of this magnificent peak which looms solitary in the crater rim and provides what is arguably the best viewpoint on La Palma.

  • The island's newest volcano, 5km
    The area around the island’s newest volcano is restricted, and only accessible with a guide, so we include a short escorted walk (2 to 2.5 hours) with Islabonita Tours. Your English-speaking guide will provide fascinating insights into the 2021 eruption as you walk with other visitors to vantage points affording amazing views into the crater and over the extensive lava flows of the Aridane Valley.

    Embrace the challenge and enjoy the reward of driving mountain roads almost devoid of traffic, to visit the island's most emblematic sights and explore its eclectic towns and villages. At the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, some of the world's most powerful telescopes beam back images from our Universe through skies clearer than almost anywhere else on the planet.

    Admire the iconic balconied houses and Renaissance architecture of Santa Cruz while soaking up its distinctive Cuban vibe. On the west coast, discover the island's 'secret' capital of Los Llanos with its picturesque old quarter, excellent restaurants and distinctive street art. Try some of the island's famous rum at the Aldea factory in pretty San Andrés where you can swim in the aptly named Charco Azul (Blue Puddles) rock pools and enjoy the freshest of fish.

Accommodation

We have chosen a selection of delightful self-catering cottages across the island (view location map), all of them converted from buildings at least fifty years old. What makes each cottage so special is its secluded location near one of the island's many quiet hamlets – besides splendid views, you can enjoy star-studded night skies and a glimpse of life on the Canary Islands.

Typically Canarian in style, with curving Arabic-tiled roofs, brightly painted façades, beamed ceilings, ceramic floor tiles and dark wooden furniture, the simply but attractively decorated cottages are all furnished and equipped to the same comfortable standards, and all boast a terrace or garden from which to enjoy the sunshine and marvellous views. All kitchens are equipped with a hob, microwave, a fridge-freezer and washing machine as standard (some also have a oven, as stated below), along with all the equipment you need for self-catering. Towels and bed linen are also provided. There is a barbecue at every property unless stated otherwise.

    We have many years' experience catering for customers who live outside the UK, and will be happy to make tailored arrangements to fit with your plans.

    You have two options:

    1) Book your own flights to London, from where we can book flights and onward connecting travel to your hotel.

    2) Book your own flights direct to an airport appropriate to your chosen holiday. You can either make your own way from the airport to the hotel, or we'll be happy to book onward connecting travel for you. Please consult with us before booking your flights, so that we can advise you on the suitability of your proposed route and timings.

If you have any questions relating to this or any other Inntravel holiday, our friendly travel experts will be happy to help. You might also find our General FAQs section helpful.
  • We’ll send you route notes and maps 2-3 weeks before your holiday. The route notes not only contain directions to get from A to B, but also include practical information about places of interest and eateries along each route, plus cultural information about the area. If/when you are moving between hotels, you leave your luggage in reception as you leave, and it will be transferred ahead to your next accommodation, meaning that all you need to take with you are a camera, sun cream, drinks, food and waterproofs.

  • We can book a wide range of routes from the UK with a variety of airlines. As well as being more convenient for you to book all elements of your holiday together, it also means that we’ll accept liability for your travel arrangements, so if things go wrong, such as the airline going bust, we’ll make suitable alternative arrangements for you.   • We can’t book flights that originate outside the UK, but if you wanted to book your own flights to London (or elsewhere in the UK), we can make all onward travel arrangements (including flights) from there. Alternatively, if you are booking your own flights to an airport in continental Europe that’s appropriate for your holiday, we can book onward rail travel and/or taxis.   • Since our holidays are self-guided, we recommend calling us for a chat about your plans before making a booking, especially if it’s the first time you’ve booked with us.
    The price panel shows the supplement for a single room and also the single traveller charge (this covers (luggage) transfers and other costs which are usually shared between two people).
  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s). If it turns out that we can’t secure the accommodation for the holiday you’ve requested, or offer an acceptable alternative, we’ll refund your deposit promptly and in full. After booking your accommodation and other key elements, we'll then book your travel (or you can do so if you’re making your own arrangements) and send you a Booking Confirmation and Invoice.

  • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

    Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

    When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Spain, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

    Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
  • (Castilian) Spanish is one of several official languages; Catalan, Basque and Gallego have equal status in Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia, respectively. The currency is the Euro. Spanish time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.

  • You are the best judge of your child’s/children’s capabilities. We are happy to take bookings for families of older children/teenagers if they walk regularly, love the outdoors and are comfortable with the distances and ascent/descent involved. Please note that the bedrooms at most of the accommodation we use will normally only sleep a maximum of 3 people, and sometimes only 2.
