National Walking Month at Inntravel

Meet our team of route finders

Every month is about walking in our eyes, but during National Walking Month we focus on planning for the year ahead – whether it’s an adventure on our doorstep, a meandering stroll next to the coast, or making the most of the longer days and getting out into the fresh air.

This year we’re putting the spotlight on our team of route finders, Pete, Adam, Penny, and Eric, who walk all our routes before you do, find the best ways, write our route notes, and check our existing walks. Their work is an instrinsic part of an Inntravel walking holiday, where their discoveries (and wrong turns...) form your experience.

When we say we walk every step, they do just that. We asked them what they enjoy the most about being a route finder and their favourite walks to date.

Left to my own devices I’m still a summit-bagger, but work requires a very different approach, and I’ve come to enjoy the challenge of finding the ‘best’ walks for our holidays, which often means widening the search and looking for hidden gems, an increasingly rare phenomenon. Luckily there’s little I enjoy more than scouring an area – on paper and computer, then on foot – to find potential new walks for our holidays. If I’ve not walked every conceivable path, it’s a disappointment!

Madeira is a good example, with the island having experienced a significant increase in tourist numbers since 2021... It was a pleasure to cast the net wider and find some equally beautiful but much quieter routes on my January trip.right-quote-(1).png

We asked...

Your top 3 walks?
The Sentiero Frassati circuit from Ponte Maira
I walked it at the start of the season in 2024, in very deep snow! It was a sunny day, and the most spectacular walk I’ve done in my time at Inntravel. Didn’t see a single other soul, and for large parts there were no other tracks in the snow. Special. (It’s a fabulous walk in normal conditions too, a real high-mountain feel to it.)
Piedmont’s Magical Valley >

Horseid Beach, Lofoten islands
It’s not a long walk, nor particularly challenging, but it’s a wonderful Lofoten Island experience. Only accessible by boat, or on foot for anyone hiking/wild camping, it’s a broad, deep, white sand beach. Splendid isolation.
Lofoten Islands >

The Petzberg & Tierser-Alpl circuit from Compatsch
This is on day 3 of the High Italian Dolomites. A big day out, that showcases all that’s great about walking in this part of the world.

Your favourite destination?
Turkey, walking the Lycian Way!

Meet Adam

One of the things I love about Inntravel walks is that it’s not just about the walks themselves and simply getting from A to B. It’s about walking in the footsteps of history. right-quote-(1).png It’s snippets from a point in time that I look for while route-finding and writing our notes. To showcase the heritage behind the routes and make the walks a more immersive, engaging experience.

Adam's take on

Meet Penny & Eric

left-quote.pngPutting together a walk is a balance between finding the loveliest way, and practicality - ease of navigation, the right mileage, maybe a bar near the end…

We look for quiet footpaths through varied terrain, including hills, not least since that’s where the best views are. We sometimes go up ‘blind alleys’ more in hope than expectation, and just occasionally one of them leads to something extra special. right-quote-(1).png

How many trips have you done with us?
Perhaps 40 - 50, maybe more!

Favourite destination?
We both love Norway, summer or winter.

Top 3 walks?
• Peak of Barden - Senja

• Mont Soubeyran via the Passo della Cavalla - Valle Maira

• Mürren to Griesalp - Eiger to Matterhorn
