Left to my own devices I’m still a summit-bagger, but work requires a very different approach, and I’ve come to enjoy the challenge of finding the ‘best’ walks for our holidays, which often means widening the search and looking for hidden gems, an increasingly rare phenomenon. Luckily there’s little I enjoy more than scouring an area – on paper and computer, then on foot – to find potential new walks for our holidays. If I’ve not walked every conceivable path, it’s a disappointment!
Madeira is a good example, with the island having experienced a significant increase in tourist numbers since 2021... It was a pleasure to cast the net wider and find some equally beautiful but much quieter routes on my January trip.
