Is there anywhere more alluring to the keen walker than the Alps, the mighty mountain range that ruptures the heart of Europe. First formed 65 million ago, they are, of course, visualle spectacular. But in his book, The Alps, Canadian-born autor Stephen O'Shea is particularly fascinated by the human geography of this mountain range, by the armies that have tramped over them, the pilgrims that have walked through them, the farmers that toil on them, the mountaineers that have conquered them, the ideas that have fermented within them.
