About La Palma >At around 3 million years old, La Palma is one of the ‘youngest’ of the Canary Islands, but this does not mean that its landscapes are any the less dramatic or that its wildlife is any the less fascinating. In fact, it boasts the most diverse flora of the archipelago, including the dragon tree, an ancient palm with narrow leaves endemic to the Canary Islands. So enchanting is the scenery that La Palma is often referred to as La Isla Bonita (beautiful isle). This is complemented by incredibly clear skies, free of light pollution, that lend the island to star-gazing – an important observatory sits at one of the highest points. The two most striking features of the landscape are the barrancos (deep, dry ravines) and the Caldera de Taburiente, a 1.5-km-deep crater surrounded by mountains. There are distinctive African influences in the traditional cuisine, in which pork, goat, rabbit, chicken and fish, such as sea bream and sea bass, feature widely, often served with spicy mojo sauce.

  • recommendations on the best places to visit

The beautiful island of La Palma – known locally as La Isla Bonita (the Pretty Island) – is a land of dramatic volcanoes, tropical forests, wild flora, and centuries-old colonial connections, all waiting to be discovered. With a week in your own characterful cottage and an included hire car, it's yours to enjoy at leisure.

After a wonderful day walking down to the sea, we returned to relax on our terrace as the sun set over the sparkling sea.

From its volcanic southern tip to its lush and ancient north; from the vast, sunken crater at its heart to one of the world's clearest skies above its peaks; and from its colonial and Renaissance architecture to its Cuban rum, there is so much to explore on this fascinating island. Superb walking, picturesque settlements and stunning landscapes lie within easy reach of wherever you're staying. We provide all the information, all you have to do is choose where to go next.

Cloud cover comes and goes very quickly over the island, so days may start off cloudy then give way to sunshine, and vice versa. However, this rarely has much impact on temperatures.
