Holiday information

A walking holiday on the French Riviera and Golden Islands

Between Marseille and Saint-Tropez lies some of the French Riviera’s most scenic and rugged coastline. Vast forests of scented pine, cork-oak, and maquis border the glittering blue waters of the Mediterranean where a superb coastal path runs along sandy beaches, around rocky coves, and over dramatic cliffy headlands – the essence of the ‘Côte d’Azur’.

Your week begins in the enchanting hillside village of Bormes-les-Mimosas, so named for the swathes of sunshine-yellow mimosa flowers that cover the surrounding hillsides from January to March. The village itself is a year-round floral display, with more than 700 species of plants and flowers adorning the medieval streets. Add to that the charming Provençal atmosphere and panoramic views of the coast, and it comes as no surprise that Bormes-les-Mimosas was voted ‘France’s Favourite Village’ for 2026.
You head west to your next hotel, on the Giens Peninsula, via the famous Sentier du Littoral coast path. In the typical warmth of the south, your progress is often – delightfully – slowed by the temptation to paddle or swim as you navigate sandy beaches, secluded coves, and rock pools, to reach the relaxed Miramar marina with its waterside bars and restaurants, and deservedly famous ice cream.

A short transfer to Giens crosses a sandbar and salt marshes, where you may see flamingos along with hundreds of equally colourful kitesurfers for whom the shallow waters and consistent winds are unequalled. During your three days on the peninsula – Provence’s southernmost point – you can explore the high cliffs of the local coastline as well as the Îles d’Or (Golden Islands). We include return ferry tickets for access to two of the islands which make up the Port-Cros National Park: the largest, Porquerolles, with its pretty village, beaches, and historic fortifications, and neighbouring Port-Cros – a wild, secluded paradise a world away from the glamorous side of the Côte d’Azur.

Itinerary

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Arrival in Bormes-les-Mimosas
Night 1: at L’Hostellerie du Cigalou or, with an upgrade, the Eden Rose Grand Hôtel (the first of 2 nights here).
As your first night’s accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of walking.
    Bormes-les-Mimosas
  • Around Bormes-les-Mimosas: 10.5km, 4.5hrs; ascent 485m/descent 450m
The walk starts near the Col de Gratteloup, reached by a 10-minute transfer (included). A rugged path climbs through ancient cork-oak woods to a ridge with glorious panoramic views over rolling forested hills to the sea beyond. The Golden Islands, two of which you will be visiting later in the trip, can be seen on the horizon. The way continues via the Landon and Caguo-Ven Passes – with more views – and a chance to climb the boulder-outcrop of the Pierre d’Avenon for a 360-degree panorama before descending to Bormes-les-Mimosas.

  • Bormes-les-Mimosas to the Giens Peninsula via coastal trail: 10.5km, 3.5hrs; ascent 85m/descent 90m
Today your destination is the Giens Peninsula via a scenic coastal path. A short transfer (included) takes you to the beach by the Fort de Brégançon, a historic citadel on a rocky promontory which is one of the French President’s official residences. Your route heads west towards the seaside town of Miramar, the way a series of beaches linked by wooded, rocky headlands, traversed by easy-to-follow paths. There are endless swimming opportunities, with the backdrop of the Golden Islands almost close enough to touch. The cafés and bars of the Miramar yacht marina make a perfect end to your walk before taking your included onward transfer to the Peninsula, where you stay for four nights at Hotel Le Provençal.

This final drive of the day is a special one. To reach the Peninsula, you cross a rare double tombolo (parallel sandbars), with salt marshes between the two spits of sand. These host over 200 species of birds, including pink flamingos. April to June is the best time to see them, though a few can usually be spotted year-round.

  • Choice of walks around the Giens Peninsula and Golden Islands: 8.5km to 12km
    Around the Giens Peninsula: 8.5km, 3.5hrs; ascent 450m/descent 435m
Beginning with a short bus ride (pay locally), this walk follows a coastal path around the western side of the peninsula, heading back along the southern shoreline to reach your hotel’s private beach and pool. This stretch of cliffy coast is punctuated with small beaches and dramatic coves, giving beautiful views of clear rocky waters and allowing plenty of swims along the way.

    Porquerolles island: 12km, 4.5hrs; ascent/descent 280m
A short bus ride (pay locally) takes you to La Tour Fondue, from where a 20-minute boat ride (return tickets included) reaches the harbour village of Porquerolles. You begin a clockwise walk, winding through lush pine forests and vineyards, past several of the island’s many historic forts and then crossing the island. The onward way is along the clifftops, passing more fortifications to reach the Cap d’Arme lighthouse on the island’s southern point before heading inland back to Porquerolles.

    Port-Cros island: 12km, 5hrs; ascent/descent 405m
Port-Cros is the wild heart of the national park of the same name. After catching a bus (pay locally) to the harbour of Hyères, you take the hour-long ferry ride (included) to the island. From the picturesque Port-Cros quayside, overlooked by the Fort du Moulin, your walk makes a circuit of much of the island, starting along shady inland tracks to reach the eastern coast at the beautiful Baie de Port Man, and its fort on the headland which since the 17th century has guarded the straits between Port-Cros and the nearby Levant island. The way then continues around the coast, mostly high above the shore, following winding paths through shady maquis punctuated with dramatic sea views.
