Bringing Hvar’s old paths back to life | Croatia

An update on our work with our charity partners, Conservation Collective

We’re proud to support Conservation Collective through a donation for every passenger we book. Here’s an update on the work achieved on the ground in Hvar, Crotia.

Last year, we teamed up with the Dalmatian Islands Environment Foundation to restore two historic footpaths on Hvar: Jelsa to Gromin Dolac, and Pitve to Zavala. Overgrown and damaged sections were cleared and repaired, stonework restored and native herbs planted. Both are now walkable again, reconnecting villages and opening up the island to anyone exploring on foot.

This year, we’re continuing that work on a third route: the traditional path from Vrisnik up to the hilltop of Jelin Kuk. Vrisnik sits in the heart of Hvar. Named after the heather (vrijes) that grows wild around it, the village is known for its stone architecture and centuries-old traditions, including the UNESCO-recognised Za Križen procession.

Clearing is now under way. The team has started cutting the path back to its original width, removing the heavy growth that had gradually closed sections off, and the first third of the route is already being cleared.

Alongside the fieldwork, local partner Moj Škoj is preparing a bilingual brochure on the plants found along the trail, helping walkers and residents alike appreciate the island’s biodiversity and enjoy the landscape respectfully.

For us, it’s a natural fit: reopening these paths encourages low-impact walking that eases pressure on Hvar’s roads and beaches, while protecting the native Mediterranean flora that makes the island such a joy to explore.
