“You almost need to wear a pair of sunglasses to read The Enchanted April – it is so full of sunshine and vibrant colours. The author, Elizabeth von Arnim, wrote it in April 1921 when she herself was staying in a small castello in Portofino, on the Ligurian Riviera. What I really love is the exquisite Italian riviera-ness the book conveys: there are flowers flowing everywhere, there’s the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, the olive groves, the orange blossom. It’s absolutely bewitching. The book also conjures that wonder of travel – when you get that sort of giddy feeling in your stomach, when you’re so astonished by your surroundings that, as one of the characters in the book puts it, you almost feel too small to contain all the joy.”

Liguria

Whether it’s following stone stairways through ancient olive groves and panoramic vineyards; wandering the cobbled streets of tiny Cinque Terre villages – where pastel-faced buildings cling impossibly to craggy sea cliffs; or savouring delicious fish and seafood, pesto, and distinctive white wines, when in Liguria, the highlights just keep on coming. This is a popular area, its UNESCO-listed coastline and alluring villages exercising an irresistible draw, but there are plenty of ways to evade the crowds. Our chosen routes follow lesser-known paths above the coast and offer not only superb views but also a more tranquil experience of this unique region.
