The Grand Cerdanya

The best of the eastern Pyrenees

This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
  • classic Pyrenean walking routes
  • views of glacial lakes and exalted peaks
  • a meeting of cultures and traditions

Suspended some 1,000 metres above sea level, mid-way as the crow flies between Toulouse and Barcelona, the sunny plain of the Cerdanya is coated with fields of wheat, sheltered to the west by the snow-capped mountains of Andorra, to the north by granite-strewn slopes and to the south by pine-clad peaks.

The Cerdanya is a beautiful, unspoilt region. The views, scenery, flowers, fauna and wildlife were spectacular. The walks were challenging, but hugely rewarding, the walking notes clear, concise and most helpful, and the choice of accommodation could not have been better.

Just to stand here amid the eastern Pyrenees brings a tingle of adventure, and to venture along the paths into the mountains surrounding the plain is to be rewarded by unforgettable panoramas of the Pyrenean chain and its glacial lakes, as well as by possible sightings of rare flora and fauna.

But it’s not just the scenery and wildlife that are remarkable. You will be struck by the fusion of cultures – this is border territory, a place of transition, where the old traditions of France and Spain meet modern Catalonia and you’ll hear Catalan spoken in addition to French and Spanish in the truly welcoming hotels at which you stay.
