Walking holidays for families

A non-group, self-guided family walking holiday in Europe is a great way to spend quality time together as you walk from one family-friendly hotel to the next. We transfer your luggage and provide you with maps and our highly praised route notes, leaving you free to walk at your own pace.

A family walking holiday –

memorable ‘together time’
With varied routes, as well as ‘free’ days built in so that you can do other things, our family walking holidays are about more than walking from A to B. These being self-guided, non-group holidays, there’s no fixed timetable. Set off when you want, walk as slowly as you want, and pause when you want – our trustworthy route notes flag up swimming spots and places of interest that are worth stopping at.
Each evening you can relax together in hand-picked, family-friendly accommodation, usually with a pool or near a beach.

To primary-school children and younger teens, as well as those who like the outdoors, you can sell the holiday as a real family adventure, with the chance to help with map-reading, muck about in streams and look out for wildlife.

Older teenagers may take more convincing, but the chance to chill out by the pool or on the beach every other day usually appeals, and you could add on a city break for some shopping and café culture as an extra ‘sweetener’.

Our family walking holidays

How our family walking holidays are graded

Our family walking holidays in Europe vary in terms of scenery explored and level of difficulty, from easy coastal walks to more demanding (relatively speaking) mountain routes (see our grading system below). There are no age restrictions; you know what your children are capable of.
  • Generally easy walking with few ascents / descents, but perhaps the occasional long day.
  • Easy-to-moderate walking with some ascents / descents, and occasional longer days.
  • Moderate walking on varied terrain, with some long days and regular ascents / descents.
  • Moderate-to-challenging walking on more rugged terrain with significant ascents / descents on most days. Compass skills may be required (check the individual holiday).
  • Challenging hikes, featuring long days with significant ascent / descent on challenging terrain. Compass skills may be required.
  • Choice of easier or harder routes, so that you can tailor most days to your requirements.

Family walking holidays, Inntravel style

There are key ingredients to our European family walking holidays (and, in fact, all Inntravel holidays): attractive scenery; carefully selected accommodation where you’ll find a friendly welcome; and tasty regional cuisine.
