Why we love self-guided walking holidays
Over 40 years ago we pioneered self-guided walking holidays in the UK and Europe, hoping to change the way people experience a destination. By allowing plenty of breathing space in an itinerary, you can connect with local culture and cuisine, lift the lid on the places and sites that interest you and ultimately enjoy an authentic, enriching holiday. Here we’re looking even deeper into why you should consider a self-guided holiday, how they work with us, and what you can look forward to.
Benefits of a self-guided holiday with Inntravel
Go at your pace

The main draw for going self-guided is that you set the pace and timetable. We provide detailed walking notes and recommendations on where to stop en-route, leaving you free to set off when you like and pause as often as you like. Stop for lunch when you’re hungry and take in the views whenever you fancy. You won’t be bound by making sure you’re on time or keeping up with the rest of a group.

Your holiday, your way

Our team help design your holiday – you choose a start date and have the freedom to extend your time in a hotel you like the look of or even add a break in history-rich cities like Munich, Berlin, Vienna, or Ljubljana before or after.

Choose where you drink & dine

We include dinners at hotels we believe are well worth it, while on other evenings you’re free to seek out the tavernas and tapas bars to sample local food in places locals dine.

Your walking notes will also have recommendations on restaurants we’ve tried ourselves or have been recommended by customers over the years. Being self-guided, you choose when you eat and can take your time.

Bespoke travel options by rail & air

We’re happy to arrange your transport to and from the start of your holiday. Our rail experts can find the best train routes and times to get you where you need to be (and even add in a night’s stay in Zurich, Paris, Barcelona, or Munich to name a few).

Likewise, we can source and book your flights, so everything is in one place. By booking with us, we’re also responsible for your travel arrangements.

Either way, our friendly experts will advise on the best options.

Three of our favourite easy self-guided holidays in Europe
The Catalan Coast

Explore Catalonia’s quieter coastline with strolls through medieval villages and pine-clad hills. This holiday’s a firm favourite for the secluded coves and sandy beaches you pass by – and excellent seafood restaurants that gaze out towards the Mediterranean. Our guide on the flavours of the Costa Brava gives an insight on the specialities you can expect to see on the menu.

Provence

Provence’s archetypal lavender-filled hills are within easy reach on this single-centre walking holiday. Stay in medieval Fontaine-du-Vaucluse, where our charming hotel consistently receives high praise, and set off each day on a choice of easy, moderate, or sightseeing routes to places like Roussillon’s ochre quarries, Sénanque Abbey, and the UNESCO-protected Pont du Garde.

Bavaria

With a backdrop of the Bavarian Alps and gently rolling pastures grazed by herds of cattle, Bavaria is idyllic walking country. Stay at a family-run eco-hotel that looks over Lake Hopfen and enjoy easy, steady walks around Füssen and sightsee further afield to nearby Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles.

What you can expect on a self-guided walking holiday
Hand-picked hotels – we carefully select independent, often family-run hotels, so you stay in the best location for nearby routes and restaurants. Often our routes are right from the door, or we show you how to reach them by public transport or cable car.

Friendly experts - we’ve built up a wealth of experience since we started in 1984. When planning your holiday, you’ll speak to our advisors who share a passion for travel and who have stayed in our featured hotels.

Comprehensive route notes - we take great pride in our route guides. Walking at your pace, you can rely on them to steer you from A to B and fill you in about places of interest and local culture along the way.

Inntravel self-guided walking holiday - Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a self-guided and guided walking holiday?
The main difference is that you set your own itinerary. We sort everything for you – transport (if you wish), hotel, luggage transfers – and you choose from our detailed routes. Once you’re out, you set the pace and choose where and when you eat.

Do I need a map?
We provide you with any maps and detailed walking notes to follow while out and about.

Do I take my own luggage?
For holidays that are hotel-to-hotel, we arrange luggage transfers for you. Simply leave them in the hotel reception and they’ll be taken to your next destination ahead of you.

What do I pack?
Depending on your destination, we always recommend sturdy walking boots/shoes, a waterproof jacket, suncream, hat, and walking poles (especially if you have any long descents).
