The view from our balcony at Berghotel Rehlegg, overlooking the beautiful, heated swimming pool and the village of Ramsau, which was just beginning to light up as dusk was falling and the church bell tolling. The setting is magical - you sit and watch the changing light on the mountains.
Traditional Alpine homes with shuttered windows and extended eaves to offer protection from the weather. Logs are frequently stacked high against the house: fuel storage but also extra insulation.
The very well-maintained path through the woods at the start of the wonderful 9.5km walk to Hintersee.
The trail doesn’t stay the same for long, making this an exceptionally interesting and fulfilling route: through the forest, along the River Ache, past vast glacial boulders and around the lake with the back drop of the mountains.
After a few kilometres of following the dramatic river, you reach the lake and begin your circumnavigation, always with the stunning backdrop of mountains.
A traditional Alpine home beside Hopfensee, dwarfed by its landscape.
Mesmerising, ever-changing light at play across the mountains. You can see why so many artists were drawn to the lakeside.
Illustrations of the best-loved paintings and information about their creators are dotted along the route.
Returning through the village past the church back to the hotel.
Every meal at the hotel was spectacular, with infinite choice catering for every palate, all locally sourced, locally produced and utterly delicious. Best of all, Berghotel Rehlegg uses no plastic throughout the entire hotel.
