A walking holiday in the Südtirol

In the mountains of the southern, German-speaking Dolomites you find not only wonderful, very varied paths that reward the walker with views in clear weather to the famous jagged Dolomite peaks, but also delightful hotels offering a blend of authenticity, comfort and character enhanced by attentive service and delicious cooking. The first half of the holiday combines four such idyllic places so that after a great day's walking you can relax in peaceful, panoramic surroundings and savour outstanding regional cuisine that blends Italian and Austrian influences.

The second half of the holiday explores the Seiseralm Plateau, where the views encompass landmark peaks such as that of Plattkofel and the Sciliar. Such remarkable scenery makes for splendid walking, whether you choose our high-level routes or the gentler walks through the plateau's meadows and forests. Again, you'll enjoy delicious Tyrolean cuisine on the Seiseralm Plateau, which is home to a unique range of Alpine plants as well as chamois and eagles.

Circular walk via the Weisshorn: 11km, 5hrs; ascent/descent 880m

You could choose to spend your first day simply relaxing at the hotel, though there are plenty of inviting paths to discover if you prefer to walk, or you could hire bicycles and explore on two wheels instead. Our recommendation is that you ascend the slopes of the Weisshorn ('White Horn') on foot – paths through larch and pine woods lead to a splendid viewpoint affording breathtaking views into the Bletterbach Canyon and to the surrounding peaks. Keen walkers can reach the summit itself (2,313 metres) for even more inspirational views.

Circular walk via Bletterbach Canyon 10km, 3.5hrs; ascent/descent 425m

Not far from Radein lies the extraordinary, geologically fascinating Bletterbach Canyon, a little-known wonder of the South Tyrol. We offer this exhilarating route through the main (lower) part of the gorge, where it is a fantastic experience to walk along the bed of the canyon with up to 400m high walls towering above you on either side. Together with the nearby Dolomites, the Bletterbach became part of UNESCO in 2009. You will be able to read up about it at the Zirmerhof, as they have plenty of material in the library there.

From Radein, you walk to the geologically fascinating Bletterbach Canyon, a little-known wonder of the Dolomites and the only canyon in the Südtirol. The path descends steeply into the canyon, which is framed by walls some 20 metres high comprising several clearly identifiable strata of rock. Looking out for rare flowers such as orchids, you walk along the bottom of the canyon to the waterfall at the end, before ascending out of the canyon (the Jägersteig, or Hunters' Trail, is quite steep but protected by a balustrade) and crossing farmland to peaceful, picturesque Aldein, where you stay at the Gasthof Krone.

After a transfer to the impressive Monastery of Maria Weissenstein, you strike out along peaceful woodland tracks across the valley to join the E5 long-distance path which leads from Lake Constance in western Austria to Venice and the Adriatic Sea. As this path dips and rises through attractive woodland and meadows, it is well worth making the short detour to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the Adige Valley. You stay in the Hotel Kohlern, Kohlern, for two nights.

Explore Bozen (Bolzano)
Today makes a pleasant – and fascinating – change from walking. You descend in style by historic cable car to Bozen ('Bolzano' in Italian) and can spend the day visiting this bustling town, perhaps enjoying lunch in one of its many restaurants. The cathedral and frescoed monastery are both worth a visit, but the town is especially renowned for its archaeological museum (closed Mondays, except in July and August), which houses the 'Ice Man', a Copper Age man discovered in a glacier in 1991. So well preserved were his body, clothing and tools that he has provided archaeologists with a unique insight into life some 5,000 years ago – you can find out about his background and customs in a fascinating exhibition. At the end of the day, you return to Kohlern by cable car. (Pay locally for both cable cars.)

Linear walk to Earth Pyramids: 11km, 4hrs; ascent 305m/descent 335m
For some walking, take the nearby Renon cable car up to Soprabolzano, from where easy-going paths lead across the plateau, past old farmsteads, to the remarkable 'Earth Pyramids'. You return by historic tram, enjoying superb views of the mountains.

A third option is to take the train to visit the handsome Art Nouveau spa town of Merano, which lies in a sheltered position with palm and olive trees down in the valley and snow and ice on the surrounding peaks.

Kohlern to Kastelruth: 10km, 4hrs; ascent 570m/descent 365m

You start with a transfer to the pretty village of Völs, where you can visit the ancient church and nearby castle, before enjoying the tranquillity, magnificent surroundings and beautiful wildflowers on a lovely walk across an undulating plateau at the foot of the Seiseralm. You pass through the villages of St Konstantin, Seis and St Valentin, with the Sciliar mountains as a dramatic backdrop, on your way to Kastelruth where you stay in the Cavallino d'Oro or Villa Kastelruth for two nights.

Circular walk via Tagusens (low-level option): 10km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 600m
This low-level route takes you through meadows and forest to the pretty settlement of Tagusens, from where you cross forested slopes, before following the Brembach torrent upstream to reach a point due-east of Kastelruth.

Circular walk via Gasthof Panider Settel: 14km, 5.5hrs; ascent/descent 615m
Head north-east up the valley, passing Gasthof Panider Settel (1,442 metres) where you could stop for refreshments while taking in the splendid views over Val Gardena before wandering slowly back to Kastelruth.

Day 7

Choice of route from Kastelruth to Compatsch: both 11km

To reach Compatsch, you must ascend to the Seiseralm Plateau and into the Regional Park. Whichever route you choose, you are rewarded with sweeping views once you reach the vivid green meadows of the plateau.

Kastelruth to Compatsch via Marinzen: 11km, 5hrs; ascent 1185m/descent 410m
This fine walk is the most direct route. It features some steep ascents, but there are plenty of refreshment stops to be found along the way.

Kastelruth to Compatsch via Fillner Kreuz: 11km, 4.5hrs; ascent 945m/descent 410m
This alternative route ascends from Panider Sattell to reach Fillner Kreuz on the edge of the high Plufatsch plain. At the top you are surrounded by the massive peaks of the Dolomites, from where you wander gently along its escarpment and across pastures into Compatsch.

In Compatsch, you stay at the Hotel Plaza for two nights; or treat yourself to a stay at the nearby 5-star Hotel Urthaler.

Circular walk via Petzberg: 17.5km, 7hrs; longer option: 21.5km, 8hrs; ascent/descent 1105m
For a challenging but thoroughly rewarding day, ascend to Petzberg (2,562 metres), the higher of the Sciliar’s two summits, which affords a breathtaking 360-degree panorama. Our recommended walk is essentially a 'there-and-back' route, but experienced mountain walkers have the option of returning via a longer circuit that takes in the Tierser Alpe refuge and offers yet more spectacular views.

Circular walk via Mont'Seuc: 11km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 1375m
If you feel like a less energetic day, we suggest a panoramic loop around the verdant pastures to the north-east of Compatsch via Mont'Seuc.

Compatsch to Saltria via Großes Moos (low-level option): 8.5km, 3hrs; ascent 275m/descent 420m
The direct route leads through meadows and woodland and past the Großes Moos marsh.

Compatsch to Saltria via Roßzahne ridge: 13km, 5hrs; ascent 700m/descent 845m
Ascend to the Roßzahne ridge through pastureland in which marmots are commonly spotted. As you descend towards the village of Saltria, you enjoy good views of the Plattkofel which, like the Sciliar, is one of the region’s great landmarks.

Compatsch to Saltria via Sciliar (high-level option): 20.5km, 8.5hrs; ascent 1270m/descent 1415m
For an epic route amid grand scenery that is challenging in parts, ascend to the summit of the Sciliar on your way to Saltria. With an early start, this is one that would please even the most jaded walker!

In Saltria, you stay at the Floralpina Hotel for three nights.

Circular walk via Passo Duran: 15km, 5.5hrs; ascent/descent 800m
This walk begins with a steady ascent up to the Plattkofel Hütte. From this refuge, follow less frequented and splendid trails along a panoramic crest and a range of verdant slopes to Passo Duran, before descending slowly back to the Floralpina.

Circular walk via Murmeltier Hütte: 14.5km, 6hrs; ascent/descent 940m
This slightly less demanding route leads part-way up Plattkofel's slopes then crosses a delightful hanging valley to reach a remote mountain café before returning through forest to Saltria.

The views from all sides are spectacular, with the Weisshorn dominating the skyline to the rear of the hotel, and the views to the north and west stretching as far as the mountains of Austria. The atmosphere is intimate and there is plenty of space in which to relax, including a library, Stube (parlour), bar, terrace and panoramic all-weather pool built into the hillside. At an inn which has such a long history – it first opened its doors in 1577 – it is fitting that the owners, too, have a long tradition of hospitality – the Franzelin family have owned this delightful hotel since 1720, and continue to extend a warm and genuine welcome to guests. The vaulted reception and wood-panelled restaurant (which is renowned locally) are housed in the original part of the hotel, while the bedrooms are in a more modern wing. Many of the ingredients used in the delicious local dishes come from the hotel's own farm.

If you are flying from outside Europe, we recommend flying via Venice. To discuss onward connecting travel to the start of your holiday, please contact us.

This list of flight options should be used as a guide only, and you should check each airline’s website for current routes, frequency and schedules. Not all flights operate daily, and may not run for the entire season. You should also heed the latest flight arrival time and earliest flight departure time stated in the connecting travel section, as it may not be possible to arrange connecting travel outside these times. Please do not book your flights until we have confirmed your accommodation to you. Alternatively, our expert reservations team will be happy to offer advice and to make flight bookings for you for any of the options listed above. We charge £35 per person for our flight booking service. Your flights are then covered by our package-booking conditions, which give you greater protection in the event of delay or cancellation, as well as providing ATOL cover.

Connecting travel

Prices below are based on 2 people travelling together. If you are travelling solo or as a party of 3 or more and our arrangements include a taxi, please contact us for prices; additional passengers often pay less.

Unless otherwise stated, connecting travel by rail or bus tends to be from the city centre station, rather than from its airport, and connections between the two should be paid for locally.

Excellent walks in stunning scenery. Route choices on most days which provide different levels of difficulty/challenge. Very good 'circular route' choices, where two nights spent at same hotel, which provided a satisfying walk and the opportunity to still walk to a peak (or canyon) that may have been missed by a previous day's walk choice.
Saltria, and the excellent Sporthotel Floralpina, is the quieter village, away from the tourist activities of strolling and pony and carriage rides, from which to enjoy the spectacular Seiser Alm and access the paths to the surrounding mountains.
Downside to the now very accessible Seiser Alm (due to cable cars etc) is the number of daytime tourists but particularly problematic were the high number of electric bicycles which could access even the highest mountain tracks and paths and needed to be constantly avoided and noticed as they approached at very high speeds on downhill stretches.

How do self-guided walking holidays work?

We’ll send you route notes and maps 2-3 weeks before your holiday. The route notes not only contain directions to get from A to B, but also include practical information about places of interest and eateries along each route, plus cultural information about the area. If/when you are moving between hotels, you leave your luggage in reception as you leave, and it will be transferred ahead to your next accommodation, meaning that all you need to take with you are a camera, sun cream, drinks, food and waterproofs.

Can I book my flights through Inntravel, and what’s the advantage of doing this?

We can book a wide range of routes from the UK with a variety of airlines. As well as being more convenient for you to book all elements of your holiday together, it also means that we’ll accept liability for your travel arrangements, so if things go wrong, such as the airline going bust, we’ll make suitable alternative arrangements for you. The fee for this service is £35 per person (£15 for children aged 2-11). More information on flights >
I’d like to travel all the way from the UK by rail. Can you arrange this?

Absolutely! We are experts in tailored rail travel. Making use of sleeper trains or stopovers in cities along the route, we can get you from London to virtually anywhere in mainland Europe. We can even make arrangements to Mallorca, Sicily and Norway with a combination of ferries and rail. Please contact us to discuss your plans.
Can you book travel arrangements for customers from outside the UK?

We can’t book flights that originate outside the UK, but if you wanted to book your own flights to London (or elsewhere in the UK), we can make all onward travel arrangements (including flights) from there. Alternatively, if you are booking your own flights to an airport in continental Europe that’s appropriate for your holiday, we can book onward rail travel and/or taxis. I’m travelling alone. Is there anything I need to know?

Since our holidays are self-guided, we recommend calling us for a chat about your plans before making a booking, especially if it’s the first time you’ve booked with us.
The price panel shows the supplement for a single room and also the single traveller charge (this covers (luggage) transfers and other costs which are usually shared between two people).
How do I make a booking?

Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s). If it turns out that we can’t secure the accommodation for the holiday you’ve requested, or offer an acceptable alternative, we’ll refund your deposit promptly and in full. After booking your accommodation and other key elements, we'll then book your travel (or you can do so if you’re making your own arrangements) and send you a Booking Confirmation and Invoice.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
Do I need a visa or anything health-related for Italy?

It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Italy, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
What else do I need to know about travelling to Italy?

The principal official language is Italian, though some regions have a second official language, such as South Tyrol, where German is widely spoken. The currency is the Euro. Italian time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.
How does Brexit affect travel to Europe?

Is this holiday suitable for children?

You are the best judge of your child’s/children’s capabilities. We are happy to take bookings for families of older children/teenagers if they walk regularly, love the outdoors and are comfortable with the distances and ascent/descent involved. Please note that the bedrooms at most of the accommodation we use will normally only sleep a maximum of 3 people, and sometimes only 2.
