This Holiday in a nutshell
  • charming city comprising several distinct-feeling districts
  • notes for self-guided city walking tours included
  • well-located, characterful hotels
  • enjoy as an add-on to another Inntravel holiday in Portugal

Of all Europe’s capitals, none perhaps has the simple charm of Lisbon, where even in the main square you can find traditional shops unchanged for decades. Indeed, Lisbon doesn’t feel like a capital at all, but rather a collection of distinct districts, linked by trams which trundle along the steep streets – this is the City of the Seven Hills!

I could happily spend hours simply strolling where my feet take me through Lisbon. Even the most unlikely-looking of streets are adorned with intricately painted tiles. Different eras are marked by varying styles – at times colourful, at others blue on white, some highly detailed, others much simpler.
Beth Hancock, Inntravel
A good place to start is the Baixa, the heart of the city, with its grid of Neo-classical streets. Funiculars take you up to the Barrio Alto, its narrow lanes hiding fado bars and two fascinating churches, and Chiado, an area of marble-fronted boutiques and tearooms. Step back further in time on entering Alfama, whose jumble of tightly packed, whitewashed houses cascade down the hillside from the sprawling castle.
