This Holiday in a nutshell
  • vibrant city with splendid Baroque architecture
  • notes for a self-guided city walking tour included
  • centrally located hotel of character
  • enjoy as an add-on to another Inntravel holiday in Austria

If Salzburg looks distinctly Italian, it’s because it is. The ornate buildings, elegant squares and elaborate fountains are the work of craftsmen from Venice and beyond who, at the behest of the ruling Archbishop Wolf-Dietrich von Raitenau at the start of the 17th century, transformed Salzburg into one of the finest Baroque cities north of the Alps.

You can set your watch by the city’s Glockenspiel, whose 35 bells chime out across the city at 7am, 11am and 6pm each day.

The pleasures are not only visual, however. This being Mozart’s city of birth, there is a busy calendar of concerts and recitals throughout the year, the centrepiece of which is the annual Salzburg Festival, a five-week-long extravaganza in July and August celebrating opera, orchestral music and theatre.
