Extend your stay
With the Slovene capital not far away, why not stay over in Ljubljana?
This Holiday in a nutshell
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel cycling, luggage transported
  • glorious mountain views
  • cycle through timeless valleys
  • well-located hotels, two with a pool
  • chance to visit Bled Castle and the Vintgar Gorge

Lake Bled and its eponymous castle deservedly adorn many a postcard here – they are unmissable in both senses of the word – but they are not the only reason to choose a cycling holiday in Slovenia’s north-west corner.

One of the most beautiful parts of Europe I've ever been to. Mountains, lakes, lovely green alpine meadows, waterfalls, rivers, pretty little villages and churches en route. What’s not to like?
Ms Wilford, Northumberland

We can think of several more. First, the terrain isn’t overly demanding, yet the views of formidable limestone peaks – usually dusted with snow at the start and end of the season – are a near-constant companion. Second, there’s the sense of timelessness that pervades the valleys through which you cycle – think crystal-clear rivers and vivid green meadows dotted with traditional hayracks and brightly painted beehives. And, to top it all off, there’s the disarming friendliness of the people you meet.
