Carrapateira & Atlantic Algarve

Rugged cliffs, golden sands, and a magnificent sea – just three of many reasons to add a stay in Carrapateira to your Inntravel walking holiday in Portugal’s western Algarve. Another is the excellent accommodation: a delightful rural hotel set a short distance from the Atlantic coast in an idyllic valley.
With its welcoming reception rooms, outdoor pool, and tennis court, Casa Fajara makes a perfect base to enjoy this lesser-known side to the Algarve. You reach it on foot, treading – as centuries of hikers have before you – the renowned path of the Rota Vicentina. You’ll soon hear the pounding of the waves as you descend from peaceful cork-tree woodland to the coast, with further walking opportunities from Carrapateira leading you to the epic beach at Bordeira – vast, beautiful, and often deserted – and along the dramatic clifftops where spring wildflowers flourish and fishermen still chase their catch with traditional rod and line.

 

Itinerary

  • Sagres to Carrapateira: 11.5km, 4hrs; ascent 130m/descent 270m
    Today begins with an included transfer to the start point of this route from where you follow tracks through the rural hinterland via the once-abandoned hamlets of Pedralva and Vilarinho, both now beautifully and sympathetically restored. Ascending wooded hills between the two hamlets,, festooned with acacia blossom during winter and wildflowers in spring, you then follow the fertile Carrapateira valley to reach Casa Fajara, where you spend your last three nights.

  • Choice of walks from Carrapateira: 12km to 15km

    Circular walk from Carrapateira via Bordeira: 13km, 4.5hrs; ascent/descent 245m
    This circuit heads north, exploring the lagoon and tranquil wetlands around Bordeira, where the crowning glory is an often-deserted stretch of golden sand, backed by dunes and framed by distant headlands.

    Circular walk via Carrapateira promontory: 11.5km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 175m165m
    Paths lead around the Carrapateira promontory, again offering scintillating views of this rugged, fragile and colourful coastline. In spring, the dunes are a botanist's delight, carpeted in colourful and often unusual flowers and plants; while the rugged shore is home to a hardy breed of fishermen, particularly in the early morning, who defy the crashing waves by perching on rocks with rod and line, waiting for sea bream.
