Vienna

Austria's capital, Vienna, is the cultural, economic and political heart of the country, and formerly the home of the Habsburg court and its empire. Grand monuments to those imperial days still add majesty to the city, and the historic centre, the Hofburg – 'a city within a city' – is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Located at a crossroads of Europe there are strong East European influences, too, not only in the architecture, but also in the cuisine.
To really discover the soul of Vienna, you need to experience its unsurpassed musical heritage. Music is one of Vienna's great legacies and composers like Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Brahms and Mahler were among many drawn to the city. Today, Vienna is home to many opera houses devoted to the typical Viennese operetta, while classical concerts are performed at world famous venues such as the Wiener Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Many concert venues offer concerts aimed at tourists, featuring popular highlights of Viennese music, so don't miss the opportunity to enjoy the works of Mozart or Strauss during your time here.

    Vienna is a culturally rich city linked to its imperial past, the musical prowess of its composers Franz Schubert, Johann Strauss I and Johann Strauss II (among others); and its position at the crossroads of central Europe on the River Danube.

    The best way to get a good feel for the city is to follow our detailed notes on a self-guided walking tour that takes in, among other sights, the imperial palaces of the Hofburg and Schönbrunn; the Imperial Treasury (Schatzkammer), holding the imperial jewels of the Habsburg dynasty; the Sigmund Freud Museum; the Mozarthaus Vienna; and the Secession building, built in 1897 by Joseph Maria Olbrich for exhibitions of the Secession group.
  • Viennese balls & Kaffeehauskultur
    Vienna is the last great preserve of the Grand Ball that so captivated the well-to-do in the nineteenth-century. There are over 200 every year, some featuring as many as nine orchestras. These all-night affairs are held in the many beautiful palaces in the city, most notably, the Hofburg Palace.

    The city has a famed cafe culture, too – the Kaffeehauskultur – and many of Vienna's café's date back hundreds of years. The equally atmospheric Heurigen (Viennese wine bars) offer the chance for a nightcap as you sit back and watch the world go by in this enigmatic city.

The hotel is ideally located for exploring the city. We provide suggestions for where to eat out in the documentation that we send you prior to your holiday.

Please note: most rooms in Austrian hotels are normally one large base with two mattresses/duvets. We refer to these as 'Austrian Twins' and they are locally regarded to serve requests for both double and twin bedded rooms. Separate twin beds or traditional double beds with one large mattress are rare and cannot be guaranteed.
