Lecce

Lecce is the jewel of Puglia, the most complete Baroque town in southern Europe, boasting an astonishing number of churches. Less well-known than its northern counterparts like Rome and Florence, its sumptuous architecture, enhanced by the pale honey-coloured local stone and featuring elaborately sculpted gargoyles and animals, lends it great charm.
A characteristic southern rhythm or brio wafts its way through the city in summer. On the warmest of days, as the southern sun begins to climb, the streets become deserted by local people seeking shade and a siesta. Many businesses close during the hottest part of the day, the population only reappearing for the traditional passeggiata hour later in the day. In the evening, the elegant streets gradually fill with smartly dressed people of all ages, slowly promenading as the town springs to life once more.

    We provide detailed notes for a self-guided city walking tour taking in the Roman amphitheatre and its small museum, parts of the old walls, and several of Lecce’s wonderful churches. Its main appeal lies in its elegant streets and ornately decorated buildings; whatever your opinion of Baroque architecture, you cannot fail to be impressed by the intricacy of the detailing.

    The most over-the-top decoration in town is to be seen at the Basilica di Santa Croce, which has a fantastical façade to marvel at, ornamented with strange beasts and allegories. 

    It's not all about the Baroque, however. There's a small museum attached to the Roman amphitheatre, and the town's principal archaeological museum, the Museo Provinciale, also has some interesting exhibits from Puglia's long history, including Greek and pre-Greek ceramics.
