Holiday information

Nowhere quite evokes the same sense of voyage and exploration as Hamburg in northern Germany. The city is often referred to as the country’s ‘Gateway to the World’ for its huge working port on the Elbe River and significant history as part of the Hanseatic League, a prosperous trading network that spanned northern Europe in medieval times. As you listen to the anticipatory rumble of the ships in the harbour and your eyes follow the flow of the river as it charts its course towards the North Sea, you can’t help but feel it’s the perfect nickname.
Despite its inland location, Hamburg is truly a waterside city – in both geography and culture. Its maze of streets, tributaries, and canals are knitted together by over 2,000 bridges, and parts of the cityscape are built into the river – a particularly notable one being Speicherstadt, the historic warehouse district that’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many museums in the city take a deep dive into the area’s rich maritime history, and the floating Landungsbrücken is a great place to try the local Fischbrötchen (a delicious bread roll with fresh fish) for lunch.

We’ve created a walking tour that takes in all the city’s sights, and with two nights (or more if you’d wish!) in Hamburg, you have plenty of time to soak it all in at your own pace.

    Highlighting all the best parts of Hamburg, our optional walking tour starts in the heart of the city by the Inner Alster Lake and grand City Hall, before heading into Speicherstadt for a glimpse of Hamburg’s industrial past. This is the old warehouse district – tall, red-brick buildings flank the canals, enveloping you in their Neo-Gothic world, while inside the buildings can be found a wide range of activities and experiences, from museums to cafés.

    Following further stops at the iconic Elbphilharmonie concert hall, St Michael’s Church (from the tower of which you can enjoy panoramic views of the city), and the Landungsbrücken jetty, you can choose to stroll further down the Elbe promenade to look around the fascinating Soviet-submarine-turned-museum or, alternatively, visit the Japanese gardens in the Planten un Blomen park.

    Of course, there are many other sights to visit outside of our tour during your stay in Hamburg. The city boasts an abundance of galleries – such as the Kunsthalle and Deichtorhallen – and it’s well worth a visit to the planetarium in the Stadtpark, just a short train ride outside the city centre. You can even have a beach day if you wish, relaxing on the sand of the Elbstrand beaches along the river, watching the ships go by.
