Chania

Set on Crete’s north-west coast, the attractive city of Chania boasts views northwards across the glittering sea and southwards towards the Lefka Ori Mountains, whose snow-capped peaks make for a particularly spectacular backdrop in early spring.

As enticing as the setting may be, it is but part of the draw. There’s a rich history to discover and, above all, a picturesque harbour and graceful Venetian architecture.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • An introduction
Chania still bears the imprint of a turbulent history which has seen it ruled at various times by the Minoans, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Turks, Egyptians and Arabs. Of these, it is the Venetians’ legacy which is most evident today. The picturesque harbour was conceived by the Venetians in the 14th century, and it was they who added the Firka Fortress a few years before they yielded to the Turks in the mid-17th century.
  • Museums, mosques and more
Chania is an easy city to explore: the main sights are concentrated in the Old Town, which is located immediately to the south of the harbour. Given that it’s fairly compact, perhaps the best way to explore is to simply follow your feet rather than a map – that way you can focus on your surroundings and enjoy stumbling across architectural and historic gems such as the perfectly preserved Kioutsouk Hasan Mosque with its pinkish dome, the cathedral, the 16th-century Grand Arsenal, and the remains of the Byzantine city walls. The eastern Splanzia district – the former Turkish quarter – is particularly pretty, its maze of narrow passageways peppered with quaint tavernas and interesting churches. From here, it’s worth heading out along the harbour wall to the Egyptian lighthouse for impressive views back across the harbour to the Old Town and the White Mountains beyond.

If you are interested in delving a little more into the city’s history, there are museums devoted to all things maritime (including a full-sized replica of a Minoan sailing ship), Cretan folklore and archaeology (with displays ranging from Neolithic to Roman times). Please note that most museums are closed one day a week.

Alternatively, for a complete change of pace, head to one of the beaches which stretch to the west of the city.
