Bern

When it comes to Switzerland’s cities, size is relative. For though Bern may not pack the same diplomatic punch as Geneva or share the glossy financial powerhouse status that Zürich enjoys, this compact capital is charming, historic, surprisingly fascinating and easy to explore on foot. It’s the birthplace of Lindt and where Einstein developed his career-defining theory of special relativity, and the wonderful arcaded streets and grand squares of the Old Town are home to many tempting artisan boutiques and world-class museums.
With its Alpine backdrop, abundant greenery and neatly arranged rows of terracotta-roofed houses enclosed within a loop of the Aare River, Bern is also an extremely pretty city to explore. Climb the 222 steps of the Münster for a 360-degree view, or visit the Rose Garden for beautiful panoramas and the chance to see over 200 varieties of roses.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • UNESCO-protected streets
    The natural place to begin your exploration is the city’s UNESCO-protected Old Town, home to wonderful arcaded streets, grand squares, handsome balconied buildings and over 100 elaborate stone fountains. It is here that you’ll find the iconic Zytgloggeturm clock tower, with its revolving painted figures and famous chimes which start pealing at four minutes to the hour, as well as the Gothic Münster, from whose towering spire – the highest in Switzerland – visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the city. It’s also well worth calling into the Federal Palace; this houses both Swiss parliaments and is open for guided tours on certain days of the week.
  • Art, Einstein & more
    Bern has a wealth of museums, with one of the most impressive being the Zentrum Paul Klee, a bold steel-and-glass structure designed by architect Renzo Piano specifically to display works by Swiss artist Paul Klee, who lived in Bern for many years. Art lovers will also appreciate the Fine Arts Museum with several pieces by the major Impressionists and Old Masters, as well as further works by Paul Klee. Other worthwhile museums include The Einstein Museum, which charts the fascinating life of the Nobel-winning physicist, and his carefully restored apartment at Kramgasse 49.

    Most museums are closed one day a week (usually, but not exclusively, Monday), while a small number are only open one or two days a week. Please check individual websites for up-to-date opening times.
  • Roses, bears & more
    Bern is blessed to have several green oases right in the heart of the city. The Botanic Gardens cover a five-acre area and feature around 6,000 different plant species, while the Rose Garden is home to over 200 varieties of roses and offers the most beautiful views over the historic centre.
  • Swimming, toboganning & cycling
    Without a doubt, one of the locals’ favourite summer activities is to take to the clean, turquoise waters of the River Aare for a bracing swim. If you are looking for something active but prefer to stay on dry land, there’s always the option to make use of the city’s free bicycle hire to explore on two wheels, or to ride the funicular to Gurten Park, from where a 500-metre toboggan run descends down the slopes.
