Berlin

Where else could you spend the afternoon strolling along the rhododendron-lined paths surrounding the Versailles-inspired Schloss Charlottenburg after a morning spent looking over Berlin from the giant glass cupola that tops the parliament building, or reflecting on the lessons learned during the 20th century at one of several though-provoking monuments?

How many cities boast not only world-class museums (handily grouped together on Museum Island) which showcase artefacts from ancient civilisations and works of art spanning many centuries, but also museums celebrating the Currywurst (curried sausage) and Trabant car? And then, of course, there are the beer gardens…

Notes for a self-guided walking tour included

In a city which boasts so much to see and do that it can be hard to decide where to start, our self-guided walking tour provides an excellent overview of the German capital.

As you follow our route notes along the banks of the River Spree, tracing the path of the Wall past the Reichstag (parliament building) and Brandenburg Gate to the city’s twin cathedrals, you’ll find reminders of Berlin’s chequered history around every corner.

This being a self-guided tour, you can linger when and where you like, be it Friedrichstraße railway station, a symbol of the city’s division on everyday life; the viewpoint looking towards the majestic Reichstag with its glass dome designed by Sir Norman Foster; the top of the iconic Fernsehturm TV tower (the tallest building in Germany), which offers some of the best views over Berlin; the museum devoted to the once-ubiquitous Trabant car; or the museum that celebrates Berlin’s cult snack, curried sausage (which you’ll have ample chance to sample as you explore the city, if you so wish).

After a short stroll through the Tiergarten, you emerge before Berlin’s famous gateway and national monument, the Brandenburg Gate, before heading down to Potsdamer Platz via the poignant Holocaust Memorial. From the flashily reincarnated Potsdamer Platz you discover streets and addresses synonymous with Berlin’s recent turbulent past including Checkpoint Charlie and the headquarters of the much feared Gestapo on Niederkirchnerstrasse.

Enjoy the city at your own pace using the excellent public transport, free of charge with your included Berlin Welcome Card, to explore.

Hotel Honigmond is a well located homely sanctuary from the bustle of the tourist areas, with many good restaurants within comfortable walking distance. Nearby tram and U-Bahn stops made getting around very easy. Reichstag Dome is stunning and must be booked well in advance to guarantee access.

Tips for Berlin: We recommend a vegan restaurant, 'Vegan 87', at Elisabeth-Schwarzhaupt-Platz 5,10115, about 1-2 mins from Nordbahnof S-Bahn station and just a few mins walk from Hotel Honigmond. It was very popular on the evening we ate there. It's a vegan Asian restaurant offering noodles, sushi, broths, salads, desserts etc., and a range of alcoholic and soft drinks. The staff are very friendly and service is very good. We very much enjoyed the Berlin walking tour. We covered about a third of it on our first day, stopping off at places of interest as we went. It helped us get our bearings in the City and we returned to it later during our four day stay. Some of our highlights - an evening tour of the Reichstag - culminating in a view of the City from the glass dome. Booking slots become available two months in advance and one needs to book then as it's very popular; the Olympic Stadium built for the 1936 games; the Stasi Museum; and the Tranenpalast (site of German division) at Friedrichstrase station.

A great choice of hotels as they were all very well located. The holiday (Châteaux & Vineyards walking holiday plus add ons in Berlin and Paris) was incredibly well organised. We really enjoyed the whole experience and would highly recommend to others.
