Holiday information

Bergen

Norway’s second city is a friendly place with a relaxed atmosphere. The setting is magnificent – the sea reaches right into its very heart, while behind it rise seven wooded hills, the tallest of which towers 643 metres above the city. Another, Mount Fløien, can be reached by funicular railway for a bird’s-eye view of the fjord capital.

One of the main focal points is the inner harbour, the Bryggen, whose tall, brightly painted, wooden warehouses have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of their medieval architecture. Protecting the harbour is one of Norway’s oldest and best preserved castles, and elsewhere are streets of tightly packed timber houses which transport you back to medieval times.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights. We include a 24-hour City Card if you are staying two or more nights.
  • An introduction
Bergen’s history spans more than nine centuries. The oldest surviving building is a 12th-century church, Mariakirken, and, in addition to the colourful inner harbour district (the Bryggen), there are still streets which give you a feel of how the city was several hundred years ago – wooden houses so tightly packed together that the inhabitants lived in perpetual fear of fire.

The various museums delve into different aspects of the city’s history – its key position in the Hanseatic League from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century; Dr Armauer Hansen’s pioneering work in the treatment of leprosy in the nineteenth century; and the rise and fall of the knitting industry (the museum is housed in one of Norway’s first knitwear factories).

Please note that many attractions close one day a week (usually Monday). The leprosy museum is only open in summer.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
To give some direction to your wanderings, we include notes for a self-guided walking tour, taking in the main sights. We highly recommend a ride on the funicular up the slopes of Mount Fløien – the view from the top over the city, fjords and surrounding countryside is superb. If you have time, you could also take a cable car to the summit of Mount Ulriken (643 metres), for another wonderful panorama over the fjord capital.
