Holiday information

A winter holiday in Sjusjøen,

a cross-country skier’s paradise
Silent and dramatic, the highland region above Lillehammer – which rose to fame as the setting for the 1994 Winter Olympics – is perfect for an away-from-it-all holiday. Dotted across these rolling fells are many small settlements that are linked by wonderfully maintained cross-country ski trails that beckon you to explore the forests, moorland and frozen lakes.
If you are looking for fantastic cross-country skiing for any level from the door, first-rate hospitality, high-quality cuisine, and a hotel and location that feel pleasantly removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then you will love Sjusjøen (pronounced 'Shush-sho-en') and the timber-built Rustad Hotel. From the moment you step through the door, you know you are going to have a very relaxing week.

Our expert says

“Sjusjøen’s focus is very definitely on cross-country skiing – you can ski from the door and spend all day on the trails. It’s a must for intermediate and advanced skiers, but beginners are also very welcome here, with the flat terrain around the hotel the perfect place to master the basics.”
Rebecca Bruce, Inntravel snow holiday expert

Winter activities

There’s no fixed itinerary, so take your pick of the trails and explore at a pace that suits you.
  • Best for: beginners, improvers, intermediates & advanced
As you would expect of a domain that has hosted the Winter Olympics, the cross-country skiing here is superb, with many rewarding options for intermediate and advanced skiers. One of these leads to Nordsetter, skirting one side of the fjells before returning on the other, providing views over Mellsjøen and Kroksjøen Lakes. You can also ski all the way down to Lillehammer before catching the bus back.

Sjusjøen also caters very well for beginners, with its sheltered terrain and gentle trails leading from the hotel door through trees and along by the lake. There is also a British instructor on hand, Keith Richardson, who knows the fells and trails here intimately and whose expertise and patience earn him high praise from Inntravel guests.

Trails: 300km to 900m (classic & skating). Use of the trails is free of charge.

  • Dog-sledding & snowshoeing
If you'd like to ring the changes, other activities available locally include dog-sledding and snowshoeing.

Alternatively, Sjusjøen offers a small downhill area comprising seven slopes primarily for beginners and intermediates (1 green, 3 blue, 2 red and 1 black run, served by 3 lifts), accessed by bus (15mins).
  • Special events
There are traditional Norwegian celebrations at Christmas, including a special dinner on Christmas Eve, carol singing and music around the Christmas tree. At New Year, you can enjoy a gala dinner, live music and fireworks.

Where you stay

Sjusjøen (altitude: 900m) is a small, tranquil village in a dramatic location by a frozen lake surrounded by silent forests and moorland. It is a place where you can escape the bustle. The facilities in the village are limited to a couple of cafés, a supermarket, two sports shops and a small pub; a wider range of shops and eateries can be found in Lillehammer.
