A short break in Liguria

The great port of Genoa is the perfect place to experience a true flavour of the delightful Ligurian Riviera that stretches all the way from France down into Tuscany. As an important Renaissance city state, many great artists were attracted here and their legacy in its palaces, cathedral and squares meant that Genoa was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006. It is also an area of delicious seafood, pesto and unusual white wines such as Sciacchetrà.
Offering endlessly changing scenery and some of Europe’s finest coastal walking, this delightful short break explores the unspoiled Portofino Peninsula, where warm, wooded mountains tumble steeply down to the Mediterranean, and fishing ports nestle in the little bays and sandy coves. From the heights of Monte Portofino, there are extensive views over the azure waters of the Gulf of Tugillio and down to the pretty villages of Portofino and Camogli.

  • Arrival in Genoa
Night 1: at Hotel Continental or Grand Hotel Savoia (the first of two nights here).
As your first night’s accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of exploration.
  • Explore Genoa
Enjoy a day discovering Genoa's hidden gems on our city walking tour (notes provided). The main features of central Genoa include the Piazza de Ferrari, around which are sited the Opera and the Palace of the Doges. There is also a house where Christopher Columbus is said to have been born. The Old Harbour, or 'Porto Antico', is the historic centre of the city and contains many restored buildings including the cotton warehouses and the Museum of the Sea, plus an aquarium and the Bolla, or 'Sphere'. To enjoy a leisurely stroll, follow the Corso Italia, a promenade that runs for 2.5 kilometres overlooking the sea towards the promontory of Portofino and the small lighthouse of Punta Vagno.

  • Travel to Camogli
Today you take the train (1hr) down the coast to the handsome fishing port of Camogli. A medieval castle still keeps watch over the narrow streets of tall, pastel-painted houses, many of which are embellished with trompe l’oeil pillars, cornices and other stonework. You have two nights here at the magnificent Hotel Cenobio dei Dogi.
    Camogli
  • Linear walk from Camogli to Portofino: 8.5km, 3.5hrs
Spend your last day exploring the Portofino National Park. This rocky peninsula, described as one of the most attractive landscapes in Italy, is covered with a typical Mediterranean vegetation of herbs, with stands of sea-pine, yew and olives leading down to the blue Mediterranean. Much of the peninsula – including the hamlet of San Fruttuoso – is only accessible on foot or by sea. You walk first from Camogli via San Rocco to Portofino, and then take the boat to San Fruttuoso, where you can visit the Benedictine abbey or cool off in warm weather with a dip in the sea before returning to Camogli by boat.
