About Alicante >
This is an area in which there are reminders of bygone times seemingly at every turn, from primitive agricultural-themed cave paintings dating from around 6,000BC, through sites of ancient Iberian settlements, to Moorish watchtowers and annual fiestas in which battles between Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) are re-enacted. The influence of the Moors endures to this day, reflected in the architecture and place names such as Benissalim and Benimassot. The benign Mediterranean climate means that spring arrives early here, heralded by the delicate pink and white blossom of the almond groves in February and March, a truly beautiful sight to behold. This is followed between March and June by spectacular displays of the flowers which thrive in this striking limestone landscape, including lime-loving orchids such as the showy Limodorum abortivum and the more discreet Epipactis microphylla, as well as Spanish foxgloves and vivid yellow phlomis lychnitis.

varied walking
superb hospitality
Just twenty-five kilometres from the Costa Blanca, as the crow flies, rise the secret mountains of Alicante. This is another world completely, beautiful and completely unspoiled, where terraced slopes, dotted with small villages, climb towards craggy limestone peaks that soar over a thousand metres into the sky.
Spring is a particularly special time here, when the almond blossom lights up the terraces and lime-loving flowers provide spectacular displays that last until June.
Here, beneath the craggy limestone peaks, you will enjoy some of the best walking you can experience anywhere in Spain, with routes through fertile valleys coated in almond groves, and along panoramic ridges and dramatic ravines. As you walk, you discover sweeping views and also reminders of the region’s multi-layered history to which not only the Moors, but also the Iberians, Romans and even Mallorcans, have contributed. In this sunny corner of Valencia, life moves at a slower pace, and you receive a warm and genuine welcome at the authentic mountain hotels along the route.
