About La Gomera >Having risen from the sea several millennia ago and never having been joined to any land mass, La Gomera is home to many endemic species. Its most remarkable feature – and one which sets it apart from neighbouring islands – is its expanses of laurisilva, subtropical evergreen laurel forest found between 500m and 1,400m, a relict of the Tertiary period. Measuring just 22km in diameter, La Gomera is characterised by barrancos (dry ravines, some of them several hundred metres deep) which radiate out from the mountains to the sea. Historically, these proved such an obstacle to communication that the original inhabitants, the Guanches, invented a system of whistled messages, el silbo gomero, that remained in use until last century and which is now being revived. Given its position, La Gomera’s traditional gastronomy is, unsurprisingly, closer to African cuisine than Spanish. Fresh fish features widely, as do rabbit and goat, and the fruit that grows all year round in the mild climate.
  • self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking, luggage transported
  • secret paradise for walkers
  • exhilarating walks
  • discover varied landscapes
  • stay in the island's panoramic parador

From the peak of Garajonay, the highest point of the central plateau, mountains alternate with lush green valleys to the coast, where steep cliffs drop away to the glittering blue waters below. Deep ravines, ancient tropical forests and groves of palm trees lend a special enchantment to this pretty island, a secret paradise for walkers.

The very well-chosen routes gave us great variety and covered most of this lovely island, the walking notes being very accurate and easy to follow.

Discover the best of this magical island – ancient forests, peaks reaching into the clouds, lush barrancos (ravines) and beaches of black sand – on a marvellous holiday full of contrasts and highly rewarding walking. To access the best walks, taxis are required at the start of three days; we include these on the two itinerant walking days. On most walks, you descend more than you ascend, but they are very much of a grade 2-3 standard, and showcase this varied and beautiful island to the full.
