Bordeaux

Surrounded by some of the world’s most celebrated vineyards, Bordeaux is a city whose history has always been inextricably linked to the wine trade. That it has enjoyed great prosperity over the centuries is evident in its broad avenues and squares lined with grand mansions and public buildings.

Its 18th-century architecture and urban planning have earned it a place on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, underlining the fact that the renowned clarets are not the only thing deserving of appreciation in Bordeaux.
Indeed, following the cleaning, restoration and pedestrianisation of much of the city centre at the turn of this century, it has been transformed into one of France’s most attractive and vibrant cities, with plenty of cultural events throughout the year. Wander along the elegant streets; admire works by Rubens, Matisse and others in the museum of fine arts; contemplate the reflections in the ‘mirror’ water feature in front of the impressive stock exchange; and perhaps enjoy a dégustation before dinner, followed by a stroll along the riverbank.

Sightseeing

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
Bordeaux boasts some remarkable buildings – not least the colonnaded Grand Théâtre, the stately Palais de la Bourse (stock exchange), and the cathedral where Eleanor of Aquitaine married her first husband, the future Louis VII – but it’s best to get a feel for its elegant 18th-century heart as a whole, rather than simply making a bee-line for the key sights. Our self-guided walking tour has been designed to do just that. Be sure to watch the world go by from a pavement café on the leafy Allées de Tourny, and to stroll along the broad quais that run alongside the river – the atmosphere here on Sundays is particularly special, as throngs of locals come out to walk, cycle or roller-blade.

There is not one, but two, art galleries: the Musée des Beaux Arts (closed Tuesdays) and the Musée de l’Art Contemporain (closed Mondays), plus museums devoted to the local Resistance movement, decorative arts, customs and excise, natural history, and the region of Aquitaine.
  • Call in for tastings
Whether you are interested in claret itself or rather in how it has impacted on Bordeaux’s history, another museum, the Musée du Vin et du Négoce, is well worth a visit, as it explores the story of the city’s wine and its traders.

To taste the wines to which Bordeaux owes its prosperity, you can call in at some of the numerous small wine merchants, or head to one of the special centres which stock a wider range of wines. We provide recommendations in the documentation pack that you receive.
