Lisbon - city of light and space

If you're contemplating a walking holiday in Portugal – or embarking on a journey by rail – you simply must spend a few days exploring the country's wonderful capital. Inntravel's James, who knows Lisbon well, gives us his 'Top Ten must-do' places to go and things to see in Lisbon:

• Climb to the Castelo de São Jorge for great views over the city and estuary;
• Take the yellow tram 28 to see the many faces of this city in one unique ride;
• Join the locals for a pre-dinner ginjinha, (sour cherry liquor) just off Rossio square;
• Head to Belém to see the magnificent monument dedicated to the great Portuguese explorers;
• Pop into the Antiga Confeitaria De Belém, home of the delicious Portuguese egg custard tart;
• Dine in one of the Bairro Alto’s cosy restaurants with a live performance of melancholic Fado music;
• Stop for coffee in the arcaded Praça do Comercio, the old commercial heart of the city by the sea;
• Take the train to nearby Sintra and explore its many castles and sumptuous palaces;
• Visit the Gulbenkian Museum and its incredible collection of exhibits;
• Lose yourself amid the maze of narrow cobbled streets at the heart of this endlessly fascinating city.

Lisbon may be a capital city but there's a warmth and charm about the place that gives it a small-town atmosphere brought brilliantly to life by a crisp, clear light of remarkable clarity and intensity emanating off the mighty River Tagus. See for yourself...
