Village Ways Award

Bengal Tiger in Utterakhand, IndiaIt's great to hear that our colleagues at Village Ways have won yet another award for their pioneering work in advocating and organising sustainable tourism projects in India.
Village Ways won the prestigious “Wildlife Tourism Community Initiative of the Year 2010” at the inaugural TOFT Wildlife Tourism Awards ceremony held on 30 September 2010 in New Delhi.
This award recognises their ongoing commitment to the communities of Utterakhand, where our walking holidays to India take place, and in particular, within the spectacular Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary.

TOFT Chairman, Julian Matthews, was “delighted with the event and impressed by the work being done by all the short-listed nominees, but especially the winners. They are the finest examples of what is happening in India’s nature tourism industry and an example to us all.”

Villagers in Utterakhand, India“Village Ways is a superb example of a private business setting up real ecotourism in a Himalayan wildlife sanctuary, in which the mountain village communities have a real stakehold in the community guest houses that are carefully designed, built and serviced by each village community. The effect has been extraordinary - an end to youth migration, responsible job creation and better more sustainable income sources. …The initiative shows what can be done with flair and imagination,” remarked the jury, headed by film-maker and conservationist, Mike Pandey.

TOFT, Travel Operators for Tigers, is an organisation committed to responsible use of wildlife habitats, aimed at those within the nature travel industry and all visitors to India’s wildlife parks.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the Village Ways projects in India!
