Turn all care out of your head...

Not many people know this, but it was the great Dr Samuel Johnson (English poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer) who first espoused the idea of 'Slow holidays'* in an advisory letter dated 28 July 1782 to his friend, Mr Perkins, who was about to embark upon a trip abroad. Sound advice as it turns out, and advice that we heartily endorse...

Walking holidays in the UK

[NB: a ‘chaise’ is a 2 or 4-wheeled, horse-drawn carriage with folding hood.]

Although the language may now seem a little archaic, we could all do a lot worse than heeding Dr Johnson's fine sentiments when planning a walking or cycling holiday this summer. Here is our interpretation of what he had to say:

1. Forget about all your cares and worries as soon as you set off, whether you’re going by car, train, plane or boat.
2. You're going on holiday – so indulge yourself! Add an extra night; upgrade to a suite; have that extra glass of wine; or enjoy that delicious looking dessert.
3. Take time to slow down and relax; walk at your own pace – many of our routes are flexible and there’s no need to tire yourself out.
4. Don’t feel you have to walk every day – have a day off to relax by the pool and to enjoy your surroundings.
5. Take whatever precautions are necessary (including travel pills, if needed!) to ensure that your journey is an enjoyable and integral part of your whole holiday experience.
6. There’s no need to worry about anything – we’ve taken care of all the arrangements – all you have to think about is what you’re going to do today, and what you might fancy for dinner tonight.
And finally, a seventh tip of our own:
7. Our slow holidays are all about relaxing and doing things at your own pace and to your own schedule. Only by winding down and fully immersing yourself in your surroundings will you come home feeling energised, revitalised and fully refreshed.
