Holiday information

A walking holiday in Liguria

With warm, wooded mountains tumbling steeply down to little bays and sandy coves where fishing ports and small resorts of pastel-coloured houses nestle by the water's edge, the Ligurian Riviera, which stretches from the border with France down to Tuscany, is one of the natural wonders of Italy. Here, you can savour delicious fish and seafood, pesto and unusual white wines such as Sciacchetrà.
Endlessly changing scenery makes for some of Europe’s finest coastal walks, and ancient paths – often following long flights of stone steps built over the centuries to tame the steep terrain – make this holiday as delightful as it is challenging, and certainly a most rewarding way to explore the famed Cinque Terre (‘Five Lands’). Our chosen routes offer not just satisfying walking and superb views but a more tranquil experience of this rightly popular region. There are also options to shorten the walks using trains and boats if you wish.

Itinerary

The key to Inntravel holidays is flexibility. You can start on the day of your choice, and are free to add extra nights.
  • The average maximum daytime temperatures and monthly rainfall relate to the nearest weather station and are intended as a guide only.

  • Arrival in Levanto
Night 1: at Hotel Nazionale (the first of two nights here).
As your first night’s accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of walking.
  • Circular walk from Levanto: 10km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 410m
Your first walk takes you north-west over the headland into the neighbouring coastal village of Bonassola, set in a lovely spot framed by two rocky promontories. You round a headland on its far side via ‘Salto della Lepre’, a dramatic cliff-top shelf that makes for an ideal picnic spot, though you may prefer to lunch in Bonassola itself. You return to Levanto along a track which follows the old coastal railway line.
    Circular walk from Levanto: 10km
    View over Levanto
  • Levanto to Monterosso: 8km, 3.5hrs; ascent/descent 550m
Today’s walk takes you across the Punta Mesco headland, offering superb views of the rocky coast and the glittering Mediterranean as you head towards La Colonnina in Monterosso, the largest of the five Cinque Terre villages. Arrival at Punta Mesco itself is a real highlight of the day – from here you can see most of the Cinque Terre. You can choose to upgrade to the 4-star Hotel Porto Roca for your three nights here.
    Levanto to Monterosso: 8km
  • Choice of walks from Monterosso: 5.5km to 12.5km
From your base in Monterosso you can explore the Cinque Terre by following our recommended and rewarding routes both alongside and above the coast.

    Monterosso to Vernazza: 9.5km, 4hrs; ascent/descent 730m
This challenging but thrilling walk leads inland from Monterosso to two chapels which boast astonishing views across the terraced slopes to the sea. The route then takes you across several small valleys, through woodland and vineyards, before zigzagging steeply down to the very traditional village of Vernazza from where you can either take the train back to Monterosso or return on foot via the main coastal path (add 3km).

    Manarola to Corniglia: 5.5km, 2.5hrs; ascent/descent 500m
Take the train (pay locally) to Manarola, from where you ascend stone stairways through olive groves to the hill-top village of Volastra to pick up a path that leads across steeply terraced vineyards towards the smallest Cinque Terre village, Corniglia. The views throughout the walk stretch for miles – you can even see Corsica on a clear day. Return by train or, for a longer walk, on foot via the coastal path (add 7km).

Please note: some sections of the main, and very popular, lower coastal path may sometimes be closed, especially following heavy rain or a bad winter. However, our recommended routes incorporate only some segments of these; we use the lesser-used paths higher above the coast as far as possible, rewarding you with satisfying walking and superb views.

  • Monterosso to Portovenere: 13.5km, 6hrs; ascent 790m/descent 820m
Today starts with a short train journey (pay locally) to Riomaggiore, from where there's a steady ascent to the panoramic Sanctuary of Madonna di Montenero. Your path then continues to rise and fall, the attractive woodland through which you walk providing welcome shade. You descend to the medieval village of Campiglia then head through more woodland to emerge onto the red rocks that give this part of the coastline its name (Costa Rossa). As you approach your destination, and the stylish Hotel Paradiso, the challenging coastal path rewards you with sweeping views of Portovenere and the islands that lie just off the coast.

  • Explore from Portovenere
Enjoy a leisurely exploration of the village, where narrow streets meander among tall slender houses painted in the pastel colours so typical of the region. Alternatively, you may prefer to catch the ferry to explore the town of La Spezia.

    Circular route on Palmaria: 6.5km, 3hrs; ascent/descent 360m
For a final walk, take a boat over to Palmaria for a walk around the island.

Accommodation

You stay in stylish hotels. For dinner, take your pick of the local restaurants (pay locally).

To make your holiday all the more special, opt for our upgrade hotel in Monterosso. Please indicate your preference at the time of booking. Wherever you choose to stay in Monterosso, we recommend adding an extra night so that you can explore more of the Cinque Terre.
