Houcine originally hails from Beni Mellal near Demnate, but is now based at Imlil on the edge of the Toubkal National Park. After studying theology at university, he began guiding under the expert eye of his mentor Mohammad who was already working with Inntravel. When Mohammad sadly died a few years ago, he handed his guiding mantle over to Houcine, on the proviso that he would use his position to care for Mohammad’s widows and children, a responsibility he takes very seriously.
Recently married, Houcine now has his own family to care for, too, along with his guiding colleagues who are trained and educated to work in a discreet style, often likened to the traditional Japanese way. After receiving instructions from our office on each party’s itinerary and dietary requirements, he allocates guides based on availability and location – not forgetting to include himself on the rota wherever possible.
He is passionate about his country and is determined to ensure that everyone he meets gets the most out of their stay. He encourages his guides to be flexible, tailoring walks to meet customers’ expectations and ability based on an informal assessment at a preliminary introduction.
Guiding is a highly respected profession in Morocco, and formal training, experience and local knowledge all play an important part in a guide’s development. Houcine is particularly proud of his Berber heritage and the Berber culture, and his understanding of the region’s history, cuisine and local highlights enlightens any walk.
