There's something utterly divine about a simple piece of bread smeared with golden butter and topped with mature Cheddar – especially when the cheese is lovingly produced by an artisan cheese-maker forming part of a social enterprise supporting adults with special needs...

In the small village of Botton in Danby Dale set within the North York Moors National Park, you can buy such dairy products at the Village Creamery where they have been making tasty cheeses for over 35 years.

The Creamery is run by artisan cheese-maker Alastair Pearson, who oversees his dedicated team of eight as they process around 2,000 litres of fresh Yorkshire milk to produce an eclectic range of cheeses including Cheddar, Gouda, Tomme, and a Yorkshire version of Brie, as well as natural yoghurt and curd cheese.

If you can't make it to Botton, you can find the cheeses in a number of outlets, including the award-winning Star Inn at Harome.

What makes the Creamery’s success all the more special is that Botton Village is home to more than 110 adults with special needs living together in shared households as extended families. Their joint productive efforts have created a vibrant and diverse community which is pretty much self-sufficient.

As well as the Creamery, it rears its own meat using organic and biodynamic methods, and produces fruit juices and jams, organic bread and biscuits. The village shop is run by the residents and contains a wide range of organic goods, some of which are hard to find elsewhere, giving customers the opportunity to connect with a social enterprise embodying care, conscience and service.

Botton Village Creamey features in one of Yorkshire Food Finder's bespoke culinary trails, “Botton’s Up!”. We asked Sue Nelson, who founded Yorkshire Food Finder with her husband, Aidan, what makes Botton so special:

“We learned about this remarkable enterprise from Andrew Pern, the Star Inn at Harome’s chef-patron, who features cheeses from the Botton Creamery on his menu. He suggested we include Botton on one of our food trails and, after a quickly arranged visit, we were instantly hooked by the quality of the cheese and the ethos that engages adults with learning difficulties in the cheese-making process. Fortunately for us, Alastair, the Creamery Manager, was equally as interested in the Yorkshire Food Finder idea and so Botton was featured on our very first advertised trail back in February 2013.”

“The journey from The Star Inn across the North York Moors to Botton is an added bonus particularly as – weather permitting – we stop for a picnic overlooking Farndale, and each time we take a trail to the Creamery we are ever more impressed with the work of the Camphill Village Trust and welcome the chance to showcase not just their amazing cheese, but the amazing work they do to help others.”
