After a demanding walk in the sun, a hike across windswept moors or a trek up into the mountains, I always feel my efforts deserve a little reward. Something to tell my body that it’s over and now is the time for rest and replenishment. And although water has its merits, for me it has to be a glass of the local beer – ice cold, slightly sparkling, perhaps; refreshing, of course; and each with its own unique flavour.

Recent beer highlights include a thirst quenching Forst in a tiny mountain inn high above the Vinschgau in Italy’s South Tyrol after a very long walk in the mist; a zingy Nordlands (the most expensive beer I’ve ever had) overlooking the small UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nusfjord in the Lofoten Islands to celebrate spotting a pod of orca swimming along the coast; a glass of Efes on the terrace high above the precipitous Butterfly Valley on Turkey’s Lycian coast; and a chilled Superbock at Idalia and Antonio’s charming home-from-home guesthouse in Vila Nova de Milfontes after a delightful walk along the sunny coast of Alentejo in south-west Portugal.

One other memorable moment came when I wandered into the deserted main square in Garachico in northern Tenerife – and found the streets paved with Dorada! There was no-one there but me – and all that beer! Turns out I’d been lucky enough to find myself there just as they were getting ready for the local fiesta and so felt compelled to hang around and indulge in this local ‘speciality’. I can honestly say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every single one and never forgotten the moment when each drop of ‘amber nectar’ first touched my parched lips. Some have been so good, in fact, that on the odd occasion I have even been known to go back for another!
