Keeping it real James Keane | Posted: 08 July 2016

It's often the case that something unexpected, unassuming and totally out of the blue, can prove to be the highlight of any holiday, as I found out...

In April, I was visiting the lush Caribbean island of Dominica, researching our new walking holiday there, when I stumbled upon a beach shack in Toucari Bay with a hand-painted sign proclaiming “KEEPIN’ IT REAL”.

Intrigued, I ventured in and was met by the unassuming owner, Derrick – a fisherman with a passion for cooking. In no time at all, we were on his boat hauling in fish, the likes of which I’d never seen before.

Back on shore, while I relaxed with a glass of his zingy, freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice (he’d collected the fruit on his way to work that morning), Derrick cleaned the fish, grilled it and served it to me with a plate of exotic vegetables. 30 minutes from sea to plate!

I dined at a simple table on the black-sand beach as the waves gently lapped at my feet. It was heavenly.

Rebuilding Dominica

Given the devastation wrought on Dominica by Hurricane Maria in September 2017, we are unable to offer walking holidays on the island for the foreseeable future. We have contributed to the disaster relief fund and our thoughts remain with the islanders as they recover from the disaster.
